Okay, Phyllis.
A great double feature is L.A. Story, then Grand Canyon. Steve Martin is in both films so that add a nice connection between the two of them. Both are wonderful movies, IMO.

L.A. Story is not funny / is funny because when I lived in L.A. I also did practically everything he did. Reasonably certain, though, I had no intimate exchanges with talking freeway signs.

And I see Veronica Hamel is 77.

P.S. As I think more about this incident, I realize I must have been flying OUT of Philly. During one of my several times through the Philly airport, I found an unmarked door with stairs leading up to the roof. Perfect for a pre-flight "burnt offering". I was pretty toasted by the time that woman came aboard and I couldn't help myself. I'm an even BIGGER smart@55 when I'm stoned...also explains why I found it amusing and she didn't. :cigar::wideyed::p

Wait. I've burned a lot of hours in Philly. Ain't found that door!

It's at Phily International where Verdine White introduces himself to me.

I was flying back to Philly once back in the day. The plane was full and I was in the first "non-smoking" row. Lady got on the plane late and the only seat left was next to me. She asked the stewardess if it was ok if she smoked and was told to ask the people sitting next to her. She turned to me and said: "Do you mind if I smoke?" I looked her in the eye and said: "Why, are you on fire?" She didn't find it nearly as amusing as I did and wouldn't even look at me for the rest of the flight. Go figure...
Any time I hear "mind if I smoke"?, I think Morticia Addams.
Addendum: I tried to upload video of her 'smoking'*, but couldn't.

*she was always "smoking"

The words earth, wind, and fire, in association with an airport doesn't bode well with me on this flying day.

It is Christmastime and, owing to weather, grounded for a rather good while. (I did not yet understand these circumstance would come to be routine. The innocence of youth.) These are friendlier skies .... um wait a minute, I believe is Newark. Other tales in Philadelphia ... Yes, okay, Newark, and my vote is Newark is the least depressing of the New York airports. And that's saying something right there.

A piano from someone's holiday gig is near my gate. Sit down and begin to tinker. Not that I ever considered piano my instrument, nor have I ever entertained the notion I am able to actually play the thing. My bass is at my side in its HSC. These are the days of friendlier skies, before air travel felt like imprisonment in a K-Mart on Black Friday.

He came by to see who that is at the piano with a bass. We had a very fine conversation, and he wished me well with my bass. That's how I recall it. You know, now that I think of it, I'm sure I showed him my Stingray. I don't specifically recall he held it. Nice to think he may have.

Worse yet is a smoker who splashes on aftershave in an attempt to mask the odor. Now you have two offensive smells.

Scents for men and women alike are strongly discouraged in public these days, and especially so in medical facilities. And yet soap, water, and clean clothes are not a guarantee when navigating the public sphere.

Very very greasy, sings David Lindley.

And I was today years old when I learned Lothar and The Hand People were the first band to use a Moog in live performances.

I was living in L.A. when that film came out. You're right, it is funny / not funny, in that, everything portrayed was lifted from real-life happenings, there. Which is what, in hind-sight, made it funny (for me). Except, maybe, the freeway sign thing. Maybe. Someone must have done that, why else would Steve have put it in the movie.

Exhibit Oy!

Forgot that scene. What I do recall vividly is he and I drove to work the same way.

I'm saying nuffink!.....;)

@alaskaleftybass : forgot the most important NAMM detail. My hotel did in fact have two of those scary waffle machines that you and The Contessa love so well (heh, half truths). But I couldn't bring myself to indulge, and after two mornings of braving steam table powdered eggs and textured vegetable protein sausage food product (???) I opted for a killer breakfast burrito at the Spanish food cart outside the show. Their homemade chorizo was amazing and they put a bit of char on the shell that I really dug. And I got to sit next to the Rick James tribute band singer/bassist from Las Vegas, who plays with RJ's actual band. Good times.

But wait, there's more. On Sunday I took a hike to Roscoe's Waffle House with my good buddy @Wintermute, and all was right with the world:

Onward, into the fog...
