The reason Rev Gary was playing unreal chords was that he absolutely refused to have that guitar tuned...got really irate when people thought they'd do him a favor and tune it "right".

The Shadows were royalty that inspired a lot of kids in the early days. They let players see what a successful band could achieve. At the time, they had Fender instruments that nobody else in the UK could afford.
Much like the british invasion had on the rest of the world. Only that event was taken to unheard of levels that has not been surpassed.

I'm happy to be corrected here but I have a memory of Fender/Gibson instruments being barred from import into the UK at around the time that the Shads were kicking off.....
Hank Marvin tells the story...seems that they could be imported one way or another. They were backing up Cliff Richard. He was well off and management paid for the group's instruments. They didn't buy them locally, they placed the order in the USA and had them shipped to London. Of course, that and duty only added to the cost. He saw Buddy Holly playing a strat and went with that.
Sounds about right to me. I've seen the last one on the list, at a show, in 1983.
I've seen these guys, too, in the late '80s.

I used to see Hank Marvin and the Shadows every week on The Cliff Richards show on TV....I thought they were so cool when I was a small child
