A failed bass player that took up the guitar and went from Strawberry Alarm Clock to Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Imagine going through life being called Wee Willie. The kids at school must have joked a lot. But his parents should have known better.

One may imagine being clad in only a nightgown, and carrying but a single candle, would affect willie negatively in the described fashion.
I've known more than one guitarist who couldn't 'get' bass.A failed bassist?!?!? What a concept!

IME guitarists who play a bass play it as if it were a guitar.
It's Blues Monday and I've got blues in my fingers. Okay, one of them.
In general I describe the difference between guitar players who play a bass like a guitar, and ones who play a bass like a bass as the difference between bass players and bass owners.

Hey @the harp unstrung I noticed that in the Hugh Laurie version of St. James Infirmary, the bass player has both an RCA 44DX mic and a Neumann condenser mic in front of him. The RCA would give by far the warmest sound.
I haven't seen a 44DX used in a live performance in years. I'm fortunate to own one of its successors, the 77DX. You've seen both if you have been paying attention. The 44DX was in production until 1955, the 77DX until 1967.

I'm the same in that the moment I get a pick in my hand it brings out my inner Rory.....
The old RCA mics such as the 44 and 77 are very, very nice. As are the RCA preamps such as the OP-6.
Wes Dooley at AEA makes some very nice replicas, I wouldn't mind having an R44 like in your image.
