Brother @B-string your buddy might benefit from one of my off-roading Jeepy tips. If something hard could touch me, like the door handle in my J-10 did or the shifter on my CJ-3B, It got covered with pipe insulation foam. Might help halved and med taped over the port or duct tape to the horn... or both! I have a soft heart for the great generation. @99Z3 reminded me of a Navy vet I re-met Saturday when I went across the street to make sure the widow was doing OK with the hoodlums that have bothered her. Anyway, he was on the USS Forrestal when I think it was an A-6 caught fire from a ruptured fuel tank and shot off all the missiles. Everything exploded and he's deaf in one ear and barely hears with the other. So he's been living with that for almost 60 years!

He was most likely about 18 years old. Over 100 men died that day. I've heard about ten stories about what caused the fire. He's the only one there I ever met. He said it a ruptured fuel cell on the jet, and when he went to high throttle before his turn on the cat, it ignited. We had that and The Man from Lox as part of NavAir trianing:

I got my shot in the middle of the Indian Ocean.. in a S3.. took off on Cat #1! Whew what fun!

My oldest brother flew A-7's->then F-18's->C.O. of the Golden Dragons on the $#itty Kitty in Japan->CAG, Carrier Air Wing 1, on the Big E. He got me into an F-18 simulator when I went to his change of command in Oceania. It was an F-18 cockpit with seamless video in every direction you could see. Very, very realistic. I was a peon, AT.
I read ya there! HM2 was my high.. the dang detailer wouldn't give me anything I wanted.. state side that is.. I should have asked for Japan.. I prob would still be there!
Shoot. This is the highest patch I got. At least it got me out of guard duty!
That was on the USS America when I was with CVW-1. I was the Corpsman for VA-34 and was volunteered by my CO to be the Corpsman for the CAG too.. but I never saw any of them.. they had the Flight Surgeon come up to them!
I was stationed in Baumholder, Germany, 3d Bn 16th FA. We were drying out and cleaning up the boys leaving Vietnam. It was an ugly time for the Army. Some day if I have a few hours I'd like to videotape all the nasty stuff that happened to our poor guys and their leaving the Army from Vietnam through Germany...
