Teisco short scale, striped silver pickguard (you know the one), red-to-black burst, Black Diamond flats, run through one of those tall Sears Silvertone solidstate jobs with those eight ten inch speakers (you know which I's a talkin' 'bout). Palm-muted when needed, none of those fancy pink sponges used, here. Mic'd with a Shure SM57 on the third speaker from the bottom on the left side of the cabinet.

Will, if I had to guess, I would say a PJ going through an amp that isn't big enough for the stage volume needed and mic'd too closely with a mic intended for vocals.

In that era, Jerry played an Ampeg transistor amp. Here he is, you can see what he is playing. The amp is a 1969 Ampeg SBT, a transistorized version of the SVT head going into two self powered 215 cabs. Who knows if this is what he used for this recording. A lot of sound in his technique.




You can always ask him if he played on that track and how he got his sound: Link Removed

The bass player is Jerry Jemmott. Here is a shot of the back of the album. Jerry played bass on the studio tracks.

Here is Jerry playing the song live (not with BB King, unfortunately) but it might give some insight on his sound.

The only thing I know I have with Jerry, for sure, is the Jaco DVD from many years ago.

Now that I think of it, I first got the Jaco interview show on VHS, then DVD later on!

Thank you, that is the jazz that I'm holding in my avatar. That recording is pretty gnarly sounding and I've dialed back the gain on my head just a touch because, while I love that sound, I don't want it to sound like that all the time. But I'd just gotten out of the hospital that day so I was feeling about as gnarly as that sounds

Speaking of Jerry Jemmott, he played bass on the iconic studio version of B.B. Kings' The Thrill Is Gone from the Completely Well album. This is my all time favorite blues song and one of the motivating factors for me to pick up the bass was to learn to play this song.

He's been on so many well liked albums, yet not many know of Jerry. At least BB gave credit to the players. James Jamerson was in the same position for years, nobody knew who the Motown players were.

Don't worry about it, Bob. I just wanted to get it out there so we can all move past it; I try to be direct when something is bothering me so that it gets resolved.

I never intended anyone to feel like they had to promise not to talk about a particular subject, so if you got that feeling from my post then, I might be the one who owes an apology.

Life is a little tense right now for all of us with this virus and all the changes in our lives as a result. I have always found this thread to be a haven of sorts; it gets a little weird out there in the rest of TB sometimes. Happy to spend my GOF time with this crowd.

It has been absolutely Nutz here. I was notified yester day that my bass teacher closed completely and is not sure if he is reopening, a number of businesses have been cited, the big three music stores in town are closed, the big on line sites are running out of stock, one of which asked me to end my listing and when I did temporarily cancelled my account, and that Partridge in the pear tree left. Needless to say I have moved beyond grumpy and isolated beyond social. Soooo those in physical proximity have had the misfortune to experience Bob in a really bad mood.
I hereby claim as a member of GOF my right to Grump.
I sincerely hope everyone's days are going much better. Because i really really don't like this!

Still going to work, lots of computers and users to support. Still doing Windows 10 Dell computer deployments. I feel kind of lucky being able to get out and drive to work, but I only drive in and out from home to the office, no stops. Feels good to be in my office. The city says wait and see till July 1 for festivals. Summer festivals are a big tourism revenue thing. I expect that they will be cancelled. Many musicians only have work during the summer season, they normally go on social assistance outside of the summer.

Same story for seasonal workers at the port. A lot of summer jobs there for students acting a guides for various attractions.
