Pitching pennies is gambling. Newspapers never gamble. Ergo, a firing offense.
That's exactly the reason he said they gave! They hired him back years later as their foreman. Same publisher, same editor (editor as in The Editor, not an editor). He squared off ....
The editor's office has a large pane glass window (so he can have a clear view of the serfs out there putting out a paper). There is a newspaper rack on the proletariat side of the window. It's the one with wooden dowels. Johnny's wife Kelly, who also works in the composing room, pulls the morning paper to examine. That's part of her job, nominally, to access the printed final edition. She's got the broadsheet open with both hands, so Tom's (the editor) window view is blocked. Which is when Johnny pennies Tom in his office.
And a really good job of it, too. They had to call a locksmith in to get the editor out.
Johnny didn't lose his job over that. The managing editor, though, gave Johnny a penny at the Christmas party.
