Get off my LAWN! "Grumpy Old Farts"

It is strange how we become creatures of habit. For us, Friday seems to be fish night, even though we are not Catholic.

Saturday dinner is BBQ hamburger or steak.

Sunday is usually quiche with fruit (I know, real men and all that). The left over fruit goes on the cereal the next morning.

For the rest of the week it is alternating chicken, pork or beef...never having the same two nights in a row.

Can't complain, we eat well...my better half sees to that!

A fisherman likes fish. It’s interesting how the Catholic tradition of eating fish on Friday has survived for so long. People like tradition and don’t consider it a rut. It helps that stores offer sales for Friday. Some vegetarians eat fish, claiming that it isn’t meat.

Meals that really impress me are rare but are still recalled in detail decades later. Sometimes people bait a conversation in this manner to achieve a little one-upmanship. A counter for that setup is announcing the Finest Meal Ever is a proper Guinness (or regional equivalent ... when in Munich drink as the Bavarians do), fresh, hot crusty bread and a tin of sardines.

And it's completely true the holy trinity of sardines is enhanced with stinky cheese, and music ... is what I heard anyway.

Some meals carried traditions. Serving become a ceremony which was as much anticipated as the meal itself. There’s the carving at the head of the table, the special glasses for after dinner drinks. Of course proper conversation was required. Start with common ground such as the weather, then move on. Some would later retire to another room for current affairs conversations. There was no television or radio. At some point people would regroup and out would come the instruments and songs filled the room.

A Steinway impressed visitors, even if nobody could play it. It was a work of art unto itself.

And today, a meal would not be complete with a TV and/or smartphone :rollno:.

When we used to go out to dinner, we'd see an entire table busily scanning/texting/? and never talking to each other. My theory? put the phone where you can see it. If it rings, see who's calling, then unless it could be an emergency let it go to voicemail. There's a story referring to an actor(Tom Hanks?)who has told everyone if you call during the dinner hour, we won't answer. This includes the kids. Good policy.

Good policy for any time of the day, IMHO. I leave mine set to "Do Not Disturb" with only "Favorite Contacts" ringing through.

Do you ever recover fabric furniture? I once recovered a chair from the 1920’s for my parents. Took it down to the frame and rebuilt it. I recall being really impressed with the quality. The frame was rock maple. Even through you didn’t see them, the wood joints were perfect. The springs and webbing were heavy duty. The padding was cotton. I reused all the tacks and other material that I could. It turned out well. It really was a job best left for an upholsterer but I wanted to see how it was built.
We haven't done it ourselves, but we did have two antique hip chairs reupholstered a few years ago, the guy did a nice job and we use them all the time.

Yes, certainly a proper sitting room where the girls might be called to entertain their aunts with a hymn or three.

Or, perhaps, a sitting room for a young lady to entertain gentleman suitors :woot:
I am glad you came to your senses and posted the real purpose of those visits.

Good morning GOF's. Test run for the Weekend Roll Call. Please report if all fingers toes appendages accounted for. Mine all here, all 11 toes. Jokes. Carey has a bit of a wheeze today so this weekend we're going to keep a bit slow. As always living in a small place, tidying up is a regular chore. Today is payday so I get one of Carey's juicy ribeye steaks for dinner and she gets a couple King Crab legs. There is a seafood processing plant near work that charges locals below wholesale if you buy an entire set of legs which is basically half a crab. That gives Carey about three dinners. Sometimes I even get a bite! So what say ye, GOF's? What's on the agenda this weekend?

Hmm. When I hafta replace my flip phone, I'll see if that's an option.

My post refers to an iPhone 6s. When you hafta replace, I wouldn't by a new iPhone. Mine was $150 a few months ago. It doesn't have all the whiz bang features of the new ones because I don't need them and I certainly didn't need the $700+ expense (I bought another bass instead)!

Hitting one of the best BBQ places in town @ 1:15 today with a brother and sister in-law. We were contemplating the Cajun Crab Shack, but they don't have dine-in. Other than that, fishing early tomorrow morning after breakfast, putting fresh strings on my five-string jazz, and mowing some fields before it gets too hot. Not exactly an action-packed weekend. The old body is not doing too badly. All parts are present and functioning.

This weekend I plan to look for a seafood processing plant like yours, only local ;).

Yeah, the only features I care about in a "new" phone are a better camera, able to access sports scores and weather radar. I don't care about email, stock quotes, apps, GPS(I have 2), games, streaming TV shows,FB[], or prolly about 3/4 of the other [stuff] available. Not even music-unless I can get LSUG. In fact, I've read that even if you're not using those functions, they still waste battery time. I'll turn those off. They can always be turned back on.
