I was a paper boy. About a dollar a day, six days a week plus one or two nights to collect. Saturday was best as Saturday only customers would often tip. The paper boy would receive a bill every week that had to be paid, whether or not customers paid. You were basically in business for yourself, although you worked for the paper. Saturday was a heavy load, you needed a wagon. During the week was three big bags.

I had a small paper route when I was a kid, it cost the customers 45 cents a week and most of them gave me 50 cents, there was one family who made sure they always had correct change every week, I used to always grumble about what cheapskates they were, of course I was late half the time, I'm lucky I got any tips at all.

If you ever saw the final episode of "Burn Notice", the exploding building was the Miami Herald building on Biscayne Bay. They got their rolls of newsprint via barges that tied up to the seawall. I had a part-time gig taking bundles of The Miami News(PM paper)out to distribution centers in the only Mercedes-Benz's I've ever driven.

Cool bit of history! Back when I watched TV, I always enjoyed "Burn Notice".

If my GOF memory serves, MarkBass and @biguglyman aren't BFFs either. What I heard (as an Elf player) is the probability any bass player here owns both an Elf and a MarkBass is effectively Zero.

My "today" roster includes a Zoom hootenanny. And in this, a problem to be resolved.

The Senn headset I use is great for all this high-falutin' videoconferencing we do here in the future. It's Bluetooth, so I can take Odin out just by turning off my video and never lose track of the convo. The downside is it's unsuitable for an instrument and voice. In part, because it's a closed back design and I can't actually hear myself play very well unless I'm using them as a monitor. If I use the headset as a monitor from the DAW, I can't use the voice ....

A microphone it is
:: smdh ::

I ain't singing, not going to happen, just want to be able to talk and play at the same time and use my headset as a wired monitor. On the cheap :smug:

One thing I can report in my corporate experience that surprises exactly none here — the higher up on the chain of command who invites me to dinner, the higher probability I am the main course. Dinner with the publisher is hazard-pay worthy. What I never saw, and never hope to see, is the publisher at the after-hours lemonade stand that serves the newspaper crew when the edition's been put to bed.

A life I held, perhaps for a moment in time, as I consider important things like

five strings
and
There are exceptions that prove the rule - I am one.

When I think of MarkBass, I think of Milan-Malpensa. Last I was through (a fair while) it is painted yellow and black. Of late Linate is way easier, and we'll see about that. Don't ever order the sausage butty at Shannon :vomit: Wait, amps, Elf, MarkBass. Is this left and right hemispheres talking?

Looks like mostly the Northern Hemisphere.

Yeah, I did the paper boy thing for awhile. Used what they now call a 'beach cruiser' bike with a banana box(wood)on the handlebars.

A book I took to heart to the point its paperback spine was broken was the gift of a gentleman who urged me on to my degree. "A Treasury of Great Journalism" or some such hackneyed title, it was his when he was a graduate student at Columbia School of Journalism in the early 1960s. He went on to a Big Deal First Job at Newsweek and so on

what we most enjoyed talking about, though, is sailing

and if you've been in and around newspapers enough to be a newspaper rat yourself, the sea looks mighty inviting. I recall ( paging @alaskaleftybass ) newspaper people have the same personality set as people who move to Alaska.

While I may yet travel to Alaska (not crossing it off in this life), I do know the feeling

Oh yeah the book. Page after page of news stories as published from the time of the French Revolution forward. Good reading. Might be more fun, or less fun, when you see what it takes

The coolest newsroom I've ever the pleasure

is a multi-story affair where the old press used to be. The ground floor is open, and there are open desk areas on the second story that is the periphery of the old press pit.
I always mention to friends that everyone should visit Alaska at least once in their lifetime. It's like a different country altogether.

My wife and I have been on two Alaskan Cruises. When God made Alaska, it was the last landmass he did. He made Alaska last because he wanted it to be the ultimate masterpiece.

A very late Friday roll call. Been a very busy day for me, then I fell asleep and woke up in my recliner. Please report that all fingers, toes, appendages are accounted for. It's payday weekend so tomorrow Carey will make me a steak and I get her king crab legs which she loves as much as her native Maine lobsters. We are now filling out the meal with salad and sweet potato for health's sake. Then this weekend I'm going to try and set up a new recording studio in our spare bedroom.

Carey doesn't want me in the shed this winter, although I don't mind a bit of a chill. Sadly, I'm going to throw away a 20 year old artificial Christmas tree and we're getting a small Balsam Hill artificial tree. It's time to downsize, we actually don't buy that much on Christmas anymore. It seems more for the kids than ever. So what say ye, GOF's? What do you have planned for this weekend?

I’m here. Had an infusion session yesterday that had to be stopped because adverse reactions I experienced. The infusion center ambulance took me to the ER (1 mile away). Docs there looked me over and decided I was too big of a pain in the posterior to deal with and kicked me out just 2 hours after arriving.

Plans for this weekend include watching my favorite F1 team (the red team) get their backsides handed to them in the German Gran Prix.

I have a real Christmas tree in my living room. I don’t decorate it. With sun and some water, it keeps growing.

Got a sweater/jacket. The first sweater I’ve owned since I was a young kid. I wanted to get one last year but they were sold out. Fair trade hand knit yak wool, made in Nepal. Washed it last night in the bathtub, blocked it out. I think that it’s going to take a while to dry even with a good shamwowing to remove water. For now, the place smells of wet wool and lanolin. Just like an old folks home.

Going to Home Depot on the hunt for wood. Got some new 3M woodworking safety glasses with a Digikey order on Friday. They look geeky enough to do the job.

Hope to catch some dogs playing at the dog park when the sun comes up. They run way too fast for me. It’s become a popular spot. Dogs absolutely love the social interaction and playing together. Something they need.

I’m here as always...lurking. Can’t account for all my body parts. Had 8 teeth pulled on Thursday...ugh.

Still here and everything seems to be working. Had an outside gig last night that went VERY well. Kind of funny that the venue is set up for outdoor and indoor gigs. You set up near a huge barn door and either face outside or inside. We set up facing outside and as it got a bit chilly , everyone came inside so we were facing the wrong direction. No one seemed to care. crowd was loving it and the dance floor was packed most of the night. Had the old 8 10 out so sound wasn't any problem. On the last song , a girl came up to me right after we started the song and pointed to the tambourine with a questioning look on her face. I motioned for her to go ahead. This girl was a freekin ace on the thing. I went up to her after the gig when we were packing up and told her that if she's ever at one of our gigs again and waits till the last song to pick the thing up , I will be very disappointed.
Another private party gig tonight so we should get in just before any remnants of the hurricane get here. Temps supposed to be in the high 60's to low 70's so all should be well.
The last two months have been pretty busy band wise for me despite the "current situation." Only two gigs on the books right now for the whole month of November. I could use the break.
Hope everyone is well.
