Very first thing today, I was greeted by a buck deer standing in the predawn light just beyond the dog yard. We all just looked at each other for a bit and I ducked back in out of the cold.

Gut strings are the harmonically rich tonal equivalent of a tube amp.

It is pretty amazing that the gut is that strong where but a few fibers of it can withstand the sawing of a bow upon it.

Silk from a spider is like that as well. It is almost as strong as high grade steel but is lighter and less dense. Kevlar is stronger than both.

For good or ill, I see deer nearly every day from right here at my desk. There's a deer trail about 30 meters beyond the window, up the steep hill. The next door neighbor about 100 meters south leaves food out for the deer in the winter months. The next neighbor down the street, which is the first house I can actually see from the kitchen, leaves his Christmas lights on all night. Makes for a pleasant time before the sun rises.

We are out in the country and have well water and a water softener to make it usable. The deer come every night to lick the salt deposits where the softener drains. Free show! Love having them around especially in the spring when the babies practice running around. So cute.

Yeah....We're flooded with deer too....and turkeys and foxes and coyotes and groundhogs and skunks (albino) and raccoons and chipmunks and squirrels and flying squirrels and bats and owls and woodpeckers and hummingbirds and snakes and snapping turtles.....Deep breath.....and eagles, bald and golden and blue herons and geese....many geese....and possums and, on one occasion, Barry the Bear paid us a visit and also a one time visit from a budgie!.....

It's for sure the mixer. I can plug anything into the amp with any cable I have, with power from the wall or the power strip, and it's clean. Plug the mixer main out into the amp (with no input to the mixer) and at anything but zero volume it sounds like a semi downshifting on Wolf Creek Pass. No rust visible, no looseness found. It's an old piece and hasn't had use OR upkeep, and was cheap to start with...so...

there's also the fact that I don't actually expect to ever NEED a mixer again.

WifeAbi has prohibited my use of those. I cook, but anything employing power tools in the kitchen is verboten. There was an incident that left the ceiling stained with tomato sauce...

Yeah, they are stinky little buggers.
Let me add raccoons to the "keep their distance" list. They have pulled shingles off the roof and chewed the board in an attempt to get in. Not so cute anymore.

I'd gotten into the habit of putting the strings I take off into the package of the strings I'm putting on and writing the name of the old ones on the package. It woulda been smart of me to write the date, too.
I didn't.

happens. You knew you meant to do so but the old brain got in the way.

When I install new strings, I put the date on the package and stash it in my instrument case.

To paraphrase: yep, that's the way to do it, uh huh!

These days many strings come sealed. In the past I would use a vacuum food sealer to keep them fresh, free of oxidation. I was buying guitar strings by the case so wanted to protect them for as long as they lasted.

A couple friends of mine do that with black & white film and paper that they've been collecting for many years.

Some strings start out slathered with intestinal contents.

Cat gut is still used today. Violins and other instruments, including bass, were traditionally strung with cat gut strings. Some professional musicians insist on using the traditional cat gut. It’s stronger than the equivalent weight of steel. It was used for tennis rackets. Snowshoes used other gut material. Surgeons sewed people up with gut, eventually it dissolves in the body.

The video says sheep gut, but cat gut is still used.

Given my allergies, this seems like a very reasonable thing to do.

I just change my strings if they start sounding 'wrong'....
