Tomorrow at 8 AM Sitka goes on 2 hour notice, which means the herring sac roe fishery can start anytime after that on 2 hour notice when the planes see enough herring spawn. They are flying every day and have not seen a lot, but they do see the predators gathering.

The fishery is exciting, it is fast paced, lots of people are in town and we can sometimes watch the fishing from the road system. It is a sign of spring and one of the ways we mark our year.

As inspiring a first day of spring shot as I'm likely to see

I wistfully remember a picture of an Italian machine with an Italian perched upon it.

She is known here and abouts.

It would be an Italian machine...

The engine coolant line in a Fiat X1/9 runs directly above the passenger footwell. They were the second nicest pair of boots I've ever owned, buckskin numbers from the time of affordable concert tickets. My own ride was the massively underpowered Fiat 850 Spyder (this is before my X1/9 encounter and my Golf).

Golf diesel, perchance?

Nice pic!

I went with a friend to a state trout hatchery in central MO years ago. He said it was fun and you would catch fish. Ok. 1.2 hr drive to get there. About a hundred people lined up on either side of this stream where the trout are released. A horn goes off, then everyone beats the water to a froth for about 15 mins then it's over. Yeah, that was fun - not. And I really like to fish.

A smallmouth bass I caught on a tent-backpack-canoe trip to Quetico Provincial Park in Canada many years ago. 21" long. I let it go. My hair was a different color, too.

I'm not into barrel fishing either ;).

Today's project has expanded. Started with blowing the leaves off the patio (I am out of breath but I still have a lot of hot air) and pulling out the old, crunchy landscape light wiring and fighting fire ants I stirred up. Then that ran into blowing the leaves and dead stuff out of the beds. Taking a break now. Then mulch up the leaves and stuff, clean out the BBQ cabinet and grill.

Damn SPRING!

This.

Fiesta orange, I believe, was the paint code. Not mine, but as close to mine as I've ever seen.

I bought a new 1978 Rabbit. Must have been the most fun car that I've owned. Trouble was that by the time I plunked down the final 36th payment rust had set in. Got it Ziebarted at the dealer for extra money. No matter. No inner fender liners...cheap steel from what I was told.
It was the last year of the German made gas Rabbits here in the states before they went to Westmorland, PA for creation. Still had the round headlights and more traditional German looking interior appointments.
I used to redline the tach ten+ times a day. Loved it!

I remember them in Canada, you know, where they put salt on the roads in winter :bawl:. Many cars and trucks I had there, back then, didn't last until their final payment :rage:. And used cars/trucks are a crap shoot. I had a '78 GMC Jimmy that I absolutely loved. I bought it used, only to find rust after a few years and discovered it had been owned by someone in a marine community...double trouble!

Oh the car was far too much fun to be legal. And yet.... What I wanted more than anything was a Sirocco!
