I bought a new 1978 Rabbit. Must have been the most fun car that I've owned. Trouble was that by the time I plunked down the final 36th payment rust had set in. Got it Ziebarted at the dealer for extra money. No matter. No inner fender liners...cheap steel from what I was told.
It was the last year of the German made gas Rabbits here in the states before they went to Westmorland, PA for creation. Still had the round headlights and more traditional German looking interior appointments.
I used to redline the tach ten+ times a day. Loved it!
It's my understanding that they used recycled steel at the time and the formulation didn't hold up as anticipated against corrosion. Same story for the Japanese cars such as Datsuns of that era.
