Mine didn't get there until January '45 with the 89th Inf. Div. Was a colonel's driver, then a scout. As a driver, they lived in a chateau they'd taken back from the bad guys, with a cook, wine cellar and fully-stocked larder. He said he'd never before or since eaten so well. That didn't last long, and as a scout they were roaming far and wide. Captured a lot of Germans at the end. He said he only fired his rifle seven times, and that three of those were at deer. But I think he was slathering a bunch of lipstick on the pig, because his was one of the units that liberated Ohrdruf concentration camp. He never told us that part until he mentioned that he saw footage of it on the History Channel 20-odd years ago. What?!? You liberated...?!? Why didn't...?!? I get it now. He only ever talked about good things he'd seen and done over there.
My uncle was an Army doctor and served during The Bulge. He would never talk about that. I can understand why. My father served in the Pacific in the Philippines with an anti-aircraft artillery unit. When his unit got there they were deployed on the wrong island... one still held by the Japanese. Luckily, they were fairly quickly redeployed to the island they were supposed to be on.

Good news: I received a check in the mail today.
Bad news: The amount was less than $100.
Puzzling news: The check was issued by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. There is a section on the check regarding the reason for the check. It says, "PART D AGENCY". I know what Medicare Part D is. For those who might not know, it is supplemental insurance that I pay for relative to prescriptions I get. I certainly am not an insurance agency and I pay the premiums for said coverage directly to the insurance provider - not to the U.S. government.
*** news: Fortunately there is a notation on the check in case I have questions. It says, and I kid you not, "FOR QUESTIONS CALL 000-000-0000". Well that certainly clears things up! I feel much better now.

The "projects" at Cabrini-Green are all gone now. The death knell for them came after the new White Sox stadium was built on the parking lot of Comiskey Field and then the old stadium was torn down to become the parking lot for the new stadium. The new fields seating is very steep, goes quite high for a baseball stadium, and a large swath of it was facing, and in direct line-of-sight of, the upper floors of the projects.
Gentrification of the area had already been planned and initiated in measured steps. Random bullet holes, appearing in the new seats, convinced the powers that be to put the pedal to the metal to avert any possible "newsworthy" event.
All my life I always had one--maybe two basses and maybe an electric guitar. Once I quit touring professionally, as I got older, my income allowed me to start a bass collection. I've finally hit the ceiling of my Ibanez collection. I have six, two which could use some work. I love my older Ibanez SR1200L VNF hippie sandwich bass and since Ibanez doesn't make any more leftys above that bass, I'm considering myself done with buying basses.
Besides, at 69, my one local friend guitar player is not much younger than me and has had a hip replacement and another one coming up. He's basically retired. I have nice amps, two PA's, and various guitar and bass amps. All dressed up and nowhere to play! I wish I had this stuff 35 years ago. But it is what it is....
EDIT: I've decided I'm going to donate my old Peavey 'silverfins' combos to the Salvation Army. Nowadays they're very heavy and although I can lift them, I'd rather not. I might donate the two basses that need work too. Time to share what I've been blessed with I think.

Yeah, I've got some PA equipment, all of which works well, is in good to excellent shape, and is basically worthless 'cos it isn't the latest, digital-est gear. I prolly couldn't sell it for enuff to pay for an ad. Plus which, as soon as I'd sell it-at a big discount-within 3 weeks I'd need it.
FWIW, 2 P_____ and 1 Yamaha powered mixers, 2 P_____PR-12 PA speakers, 2 custom made PA cabs with a 15" and a horn each, 2 Kustom(brand)floor monitors, 4 speaker stands, 2 Gollehon(brand)PA columns w/4x8" and a horn each. Also 1 JBL EON ONE self contained PA thing-y[technical term]w/ a 4 channel passive mixer to allow 4 mics to be used. All o' this[stuff]is in a corner by the door to the garage so that on the outside chance I ever need it again, it'll be easy(?)to get to a van.(I have 2)

I do. I use frozen blueberries off season.
It's unfortunate but people scour the Salvation Army for stuff that they can sell on ebay. There are books with the past sale value of everything. People carry them to garage sales when picking. For many it's a business. Maybe a school can help.
I know someone who regularly buys antique furniture at the Salvation Army and flips the items for large profits.
Find a place like this. I've gotten tax receipts for donations from non-profit schools.

It isn't unusual for council houses in England to be unclean. Vermin flourishes in them. In some areas, it isn't just high rise ghetto estates but also in council owned houses on streets with properties that people own. Some people bring crime and property neglect which brings down the area. The more kids they have, the more social assistance they take in. Both the area and in some cases the people can be referred to as council house vermin. Somewhat akin to what some call trailer trash.

There are Americans who reach adulthood without ever realizing there are stupid English people
Thank goodness for the fine cultural exchange programs that seek to bridge this gap.
That's a thought for when my playing days are over. AFA, the 'write-off', we don't have enuff write-offs(or income) to affect our taxes.
