I agree with your like of ducks...the others are predators and bottom feeders, not unlike some humans
.
A nearby butcher does very well selling farm raised pigeons and squab as well as other game birds and meat.
I can see where this is going and no, we do not need to discuss the lack of wildlife, etc., around certain restaurants

Swans are mean, Lohengrin be darned. Beware the sausage butty at the airports. They dress the butty with ketchup without telling you.

Every once in a while the fattest squirrels in the park seem to vanish. I wonder if someone is eating them.

Beware of any sausage. There is no officially approved list of ingredients. There is a good reason for that. Many people do not want to know where it came from

The minimum amount of meat in an English sausage as required by law ensures the cheapest ones have a "texture" not found elsewhere. Once tasted, never forgotten. And, inexplicably, good

Carey and I don't own a boat. One weekend, we were feeling silly, and bought a small inflatable rubber raft from True Value. We took the raft to Swan Lake (here in Sitka) and proceeded to paddle around the lake. Evidently we got too close to a pair of swans, and one of them came up to me and started beating the H3LL out of me with their wings! And biting my arms! Carey tried to pull an oar out of the paddle holder but didn't get it out in time. After he beat me up, he shook off his wings, snorted at me and left. I was so humiliated! Beaten up by a swan!
Well, I was upset so we went home and got our two 100 pound dogs and brought them to Swan Lake. I told them to go get the swans but they couldn't keep up. It was pretty funny, and the dogs had fun. The next day, Carey looked at my arm and exclaimed, "you're all black and blue on both arms and elbows from the swan!"
Needless to say, that ended our nautical days on Swan Lake.Swan Lake:

Is that unusual not to own a boat on Sitka?
Not that unusual. Boats are financial black holes. They start out looking all purdy and everything, and summon images of peaceful, sunny, happy fishing holes and family time, but wait until the boat needs work. I've seen some of the boat mechanics' homes in Sitka and I think I chose the wrong line of work!
Also Alaska has the highest ratio of small planes per person in the U.S. It's because of the isolation in many rural communities. Right down the hill from where I live a guy keeps his Cessna parked in his yard on a trailer. Not an unusual sight for Sitka.

I used to go down to Firestone store and find a thrown out tractor inner tube. When patched, they made excellent boats.

Comparing boats to airplane black holes, I would go for boats. Especially an inflatable from True Value. This one is not bad provided you keep up with the PM...
