The DEC PDP-11 was the backbone of the most advanced publishing solutions on the planet for a long while.

The PDP-11 was great. Loved it. Even kinda liked the PDP-8 and its octal instruction set. But for those of us writing real-time assembler-coded apps, the -11 was a dream.

What happened between the PDPs and the VAXs remains a mystery to me (song title!).

A couple of years ago my wife wanted a "stocked" tool box for Christmas. She was tired of having to tell me where she left my tools after she used them. She didn't want the pink gripped, small "ladies" tools, which is what I would not have gotten her, so I got her a set that will perform well.

I was on the user side. Hated DEC. I'd come in on Monday morning, only to find that the VAX support buttwipes in Colorado Springs had dialed into my 780 and twin 750s and updated the OS. Which killed all of my device drivers. And usually a bunch of other stuff, too. Then I'd waste days recovering. I came to absolutely HATE even-versioned VMS releases. Most of the DOT-odd number releases were pretty clean. But the DOT-evens? Shudder.

We had a VAX for awhile that ran a customer leasing app. The machine was troublesome. I learned a little about it and it was like working on a big PC with DOS except the names of the commands made no sense, like GREP. The software company finally made a version for the AS/400 so we dumped the VAX.

Oh, in addition to the dishwasher and drain yesterday our home phone service went out. Supposed to be fixed today. Tons of fun and all in one day as a bonus!

Dishwasher installed! They came when they said they would. Nice guy and had it done in about 1.5 hrs. So glad I'll be able to wash motorcycle parts and paint brushes again!

I heard about the "chip shortage" creating a delay in new car production. Wasn't a big deal to me because I can't afford a new car anyway. I just bought a used truck with a crappy radio. Went to Best Buy to get a new one one. After making my selection, I tracked down a sales rep who said they don't have any in stock, anywhere in the country. Why? "chip shortage".

A couple of days ago I was driving down a pretty busy street and noticed a bicyclist coming toward me in my lane. He was a good distance away, but I noticed him because he had something I couldn't identify that seemed to be sticking out four feet above his head.


As he got to me , I could see it was a fairly old man (I'm 56, he looks older) riding a boy's bike.


He was steering the bike with one hand and balancing a 6 foot marijuana plant on the handlebars with the other.




Only in Houston.

I had a friend years ago that planted one in his front yard. His mom asked what it was and he said he wasn't sure, it just came up. It got to be about 3 ft tall and bushy, about 3 ft in diameter. He may have pruned it occasionally. Someone stole it and you could see the dirt clod trail going across the yard.

Back to school this week which should have been last week. Taking a one on one arranging class and playing in the combo. Fun stuff!

I picked "A Foggy Day" for the arranging project. This was one of the first jazz tunes I learned. Doing the project as an instrumental with 4 horns and rhythm section. I've arranged about 15 tunes but there is always stuff to learn and improve.

This book is required for the class and is pretty good. The school book store was out and couldn't get it until next week and at a higher price so I ordered from Amazon.

I don't understand Amazon Prime trials. They have an offer for one week at 1.99 but at checkout you can get 30 days free. Well, that's a tough decision! I took the free again to get the book on Sat. There is not enough in Prime for me to make it worth the fee. I seldom need anything in two days, don't stream movies or music, I can get Kindle books on loan from the library, if I want a specific book I'll buy it.

I thought years ago of auditing an arranging course for my own amusement and amazement. Never did, don't need it now with the current-and foreseeable future(none)-for live music, esp. for more than 4 people. Did a coupla charts for the 'captive' big band I was a part of during my Navy time. They came out exactly what I was hearing in my head so I guess I did something right.

I like porters/stouts. Not into IPA's. Currently into a bourbon barrel aged porter from 3 Daughters Brewery in St. Petersburg, FL. Really good.

Our local source for ̶b̶i̶r̶d̶ parrot cage liner published a story of a 4 hour public meeting where our informed citizenry voiced their views on the public library's display of 10 LGBT titles for Pride Month. My Seat-of-the-pants guess is the article had the Streisand Effect.

I will take your word for it. I am happy with the "odd" glass of chardonnay . The only time I depart from that is when it's over 90F. That's when cold beer comes in. In Canada, during the winter with my boys, I will partake in the "odd" glass of scotch. The word "odd" is subject to interpretation...
