Except on a PC. I got my hands on the multi-platform source code for VI. I stripped it of all multi-platform support, added doubly-linked lists for line management (I wanted to be able to scroll backward as well; I wasn't worried about memory consumption) and PC-specific display code. I had written a couple of VGA display apps that PC Magazine picked up and included on one of their freebie disks that came with the mag, that I repurposed for VI. They added the native 28, 40 and 50 lines/screen modes supported by the VGA card.

At the time (early '90s), it was the best code editor for DOS. Nothing commercially available came close. Having the source to my code editor was wonderful. I made it do exactly what I needed. I used it professionally for years.

The "cool vi trick of the day" coffee breaks came up with negative attendance.

Not that I would ever be considered a coder, or a sysadmin, or anything other than a newspaper wook. That's what my fine employers needed. The inside of a newspaper and its workings is as opaque to them as a wall of C++ is to me.

You (plural you) might not find yourself greatly surprised who is called upon for the trade show role known as "demo dolly". Wanna see someone assemble and publish the front page of a newspaper in a twinkling of an eye? The main draw at our booth are the company owner's wife's homemade cookies/biscuits/whatever. He's from the West Country, drives a Lotus. And is particularly engaging.

We close sales, I go to work. That's how it is, in the beginning of this alleged career. It's like working for Old Fezziwig. That is when the tradewinds come up and I find myself looking at an offer from DEC that's impossible to refuse. That is probably stage 2 of my life's Saturn V ride.

What I have in front of me now is a morning post-lockdown salon appointment before I make my promised Music Theory for the Bass Player video. This cohort is just beyond the halfway point as the summer cohort gets underway Saturday.

What I'm trying to wrap my head around is how casual I appear to myself to be as I'll be doing a technical exercise that I know to be way beyond my ability a year ago. What's likely to happen, based on the last 20 weeks of this, is I'll setup, warmup, get a take with no more than an attempt or three, and call it good.

That's fairly astonishing to me as one who forever raised the bar higher. It shouldn't have to wait until retirement, is my take. My other take is, I'm having fun

With father’s day comes tool sales. If you are going to buy a tool at any time of the year, it’s now.

Apparently so, because most of the decently priced models of reasonably good quality are out of stock everywhere I look.

Oddly enough, a popular router used by luthiers is the smallish Bosch Colt. Next comes a Dremel with a router attachment. Dewalt makes some nice routers. I use all three products.

I've had the router attachment for my Dremel for some years. A very handy thing indeed, for small work. A bit under-sized for what I've got planned, however.

A Triton would be nice, but see the "out of stock" note above. I'm looking at some of the DeWalt options.

A couple of years ago my wife wanted a "stocked" tool box for Christmas. She was tired of having to tell me where she left my tools after she used them. She didn't want the pink gripped, small "ladies" tools, which is what I would not have gotten her, so I got her a set that will perform well.

My mother made a similar request of my father when I was a kid (long before the era of pink-handled, cutesy tools). Mrs. Winslow married into a family full of no-nonsense, get-the-job-done women. She fits in great.

Permit me to vent a bit: There was a senseless shooting in Royal Palm Beach, FL,(35 miles south of me)a week ago. I generally don't watch the news as it's depressing and rarely affects me. This time it did/does. Some idiot shot and killed a grandmother and toddler in a grocery store. He didn't know them. I did. I worked with the woman's late husband, a fine drummer, for ~30 years, and knew the widow even longer, since her husband passed. I was called with the information Thursday by a mutual friend. I've been processing this waste of 2 lives since then. It's a kind of hollow feeling.
The murderer had been posting for some time on FB that he wanted to kill someone. He picked them at random. I hope there's a special spot in hell reserved for him. He killed himself afterwards. He should have started with himself.
As a GOF I expect to lose friends, coworkers, and classmates to age or disease. Not this.
Don't like being a 'wet blanket', but felt the need to share and, to some degree, explain my comparative lack of flippant responses the past coupla days.

So sorry to hear this affected you so closely, GP! We here at SchlossWrob knew one of those lost in the Boulder grocery shooting. So I understand a little of your pain. Sadly it is getting to the point where nearly everyone knows someone killed in a mass shooting.

Unfortunately, there's no obvious way to know who's going to go nuts and do something like this. It's an almost every day occurrence.

Sorry for the loss of your dear friend and toddler. This country has got to find common ground and find a way to stop the wholesale murder of the masses. I think there is a new culture of hate that has especially perpetrated over the last four years. I believe it was by design. When I was growing up and then attending UW in Seattle there were never any mass shootings. This is a 21st century phenomenon. I have no suggestions, only offering prayers for your lost friend and toddler.
