Society should vote for aid for the mentally ill and treat them before these thing happen.
There are lots of resources and social workers. They clearly aren’t being used properly. They need a different model to deal with the problem.
For a year or so, there has been a soup kitchen and beds set up in a nearby church. They were moved from another church at the edge of a newly built outdoor festival area. There’s more paid staff than beds. People spend the day begging for money that they use for drugs and alcohol. When they get enough every day they pass out on the sidewalks, they make messes. Some streets I avoid, many other residents do as well. Covid fears make it worse. A lot of police resources go into dealing with them. To the point where they have little time for dealing with real crimes. The city provides them with apartments and care.
Nothing ever changes, year after year. Clean them up and they go back to their friends and old ways. The city’s approach has been that they can’t change them, so they contain them in urban pockets. They aren’t in rich neighbourhoods, they aren’t near fancy restaurants, they aren’t near hotels or major shopping where tourists go.
A family member was adopted as a baby, a native from the far north. He had frequent access to his family up north, he knew them well, even moved there for periods. He was in and out of trouble his entire life, mostly related to drugs and alcohol. He was given an apartment and money, lived on grants. Had constant medical care to help him deal with life problems. He never finished high school but exceptions were made and he was accepted into university. There he had an office dedicated to helping native students cope with school. He kept failing (didn’t attend) and dropping out but was always welcomed back.
He died of a drug overdose. He had a lot of social assistance throughout his life, despite everyone trying, nothing worked. This happens all too often, mental health is like that.
