Get off my LAWN! "Grumpy Old Farts"

When I grew up it was simply common courtesy to hold a door for someone. If there was an older person or a lady it was also expected that a gentleman would step aside, hold the door, and allow that person to go first as a sign of respect.

There were a few years when some women would ask if I thought they were unable to open a door themselves, but over time I think most appreciated being shown a respectful courtesy that implied nothing about their status in the world or physical abilities. I received a thank you much more often than a lecture about gender equality.
I hold doors open for men, too. Too old to be in a hurry!

Denny's is what's open after presstime at the Muthalode Morning Mungpie. An engineer reasonably less than 55 was always asked if he wanted a senior citizen menu :)

Lol! Reminds me of a fond memory!

Many moons ago, in a long ago bar band, we all did an “after the late gig” breakfast at a local Denny’s. Of course we’d all had a few at the gig before we got there. We’re met at the door by a rent a cop who’s wider than he is tall and who gruffly informs us to read the house rules which are inconveniently posted to the right of the cashier in micro font on piece of paper the size of a postcard. It’s to inform us that we must all prepay our meals before served. (You all remember when Denny’s tried this stunt)

Be that as it may, there’s a split second of silence before we all 5 of us simultaneously burst out laughing in this guy’s face. Needless to say, Barney Fife gets ruffled and tries to kick us out. To further compound this comedy, one of our group, (the drunkest of course) starts to question the legality of the whole business. I’m ready to bolt because I can see a failed sobriety test in my immediate future, when the night manager comes up and it turns out to be a former roommate of mine. Whew!
We then do get served without paying up front first. However, I avoided all Denny’s for years because of that rule. I missed my Grand Slam Breakfast! :sour:

Years ago I lived in Sarasota FL. Sarasota is a yankee retirement community. There are 2 places one can order a sweet iced tea---the Waffle House on the north end of town, and the Waffle House on the south end of town. :)
The original is in Avondale Estates, Ga not far from where I grew up. I ate there with Dad countless times. It's a museum now. Museum - Waffle House
Cool that they bought that property back after it had turned into a tire store.

The original McDonald's in Downey, CA...museum on the right.

Love the Cadillacs, Lincoln, and piece of a Mustang in that picture.

What's the one restaurant chain that Denny's will NEVER be able to compete with?

Thaz right! Waffle House!

WSJ article headline: If You Can Manage a Waffle House, You Can Manage Anything

These were known as “Awful House” to us in Michigan. I’ve eaten there quite a few times when on the road.
Not that bad really for breakfast.

Downey makes so much sense for McDonald's

Zero recall of Denny's prepay. At a breakfast joint now with sausage, biscuits, and gravy. The restaurant is intentionally cute, but not Cracker Barrel intentionally cute. Locally owned, they grew from one location to three.

I notice the line between courtesy and overt patriarchy is sometimes blurry. Reading intent is a life skill. The couple sitting across from me fears and loathes everything I am, and that's plain to see. What's to do?

Regarding the pre pay. This was either ‘89 or ‘90 when my incident happened. It may have regional at the time, but never kept track of it since I just shunned Denny’s entirely after that. Was told at the time it was a new policy so I assumed it was company wide.I’m in central Ca.

That's when parking spaces were a lot wider...

Now people are a lot wider. And people getting mean with seats, like on Spirit Air [StolenJoke] the Waffle House of the Sky [/StolenJoke]

Nobody ever said that being a bassist would be easy!

Absolutely nobody told me being a bassist is easy :roflmao:

So yeah, right, eating my truly obscene sausage, biscuits, and gravy, and I'm wearing vintage Dead orange tie dye of a skeleton wheel mandala. The couple with greatly compromised physical mobility very slowly seats themselves across from me. I'm looking at another world, really. Were I in Star Fleet, I'd translate the signal as

don't stop at this planet

WOW! -A slinky Dionne!!!

Passed my "adult test" again tonight. That's wearing white at a restaurant where drippy things are brought to the table, and still white when the meal's finished.

Nyet, not Denny's. An Irish pub, and the first visit since before lockdown.

Congratulations! Celery Stalks At Midnight ( ) but gravy spots you anytime!

I hear you on that...you can't even use some of the parking spaces these days unless you want to crawl out of a sunroof, slide down a windshield onto a hood or trunk lid, and then jump to the ground from there.

If you have any video of you practicing your parking lot technique, we'd love to see it!

We have graduated to having a “Diva” mirror tag, as my niece calls it. The handicap parking thingy. Parking up close and van-wide spots. It sucks that we’ve earned that privilege but I use it and do somersaults all the rest of the way into the store!:woot:

I just downsized from a GM Sierra 2500 HD 4x4, extended cag to a Colorado crew, 4x4 and love fitting in to the smaller spaces. Gas mileage is much better as well!

While I don't wait tables in the literal sense — though in the figurative sense that's my whole life — Braun epilator.

What I also saw last night are uncouth men who don't remove their hat at a meal. :rollno:

Here in Texas there are few things for which we remove our hats. I wear a hat/cap almost everywhere I go, but I was taught, that no hats were worn at the table, when in church, or when greeting someone. There are those, whom I see everyday, who would have been taken to task by my parents, grandparents, etc.
But as @GonePlaid said, most restaurants no longer provide hat racks, or hat check locations.
