Technology may very well be the death of us all when AI learns too much and too well (think Skynet). The US, China and probably Russia have tested / are testing autonomous drones that have successfully found their air and ground targets. I hope they've successfully incorporated Issac Asimov's Rules of Robotics.

Having worked with robots and AI, it's my experience that we're a long way off. The first law gets broken all too often. The second law assumes no programming errors. When does that ever happen. The third law, what I call collision avoidance, kind of works as long as calibration is intact and the field is not too complex. Sometimes it isn't. Those self driving road vehicles keep being not entirely successful. Aircraft do a better job but I still want a human monitoring.

A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
Second Law
A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
Third Law
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Years ago I was crossing the sunshine skyway bridge across the tampa bay inlet. A slower car in front of me bugged me. I don't know why but I slowed instead of passing. Then the car crossed my lane and hit the wall. I stopped of course. Old guy fell asleep. He was ok. 6th sense, spidey sense, whatever you wanna call it, AI won't get a feeling something ain't right. I did.
 
We see AI in action every day. It’s not impressive. Take google analytics for example. Please! They collect data on what sites you visit, what you looked at and come up with advertisement that I seemingly want. It always fails.

If I visit a shoe store and order shoes, google want to keep showing me more shoes. It doesn’t make sense.

Youtube is bad. I watch one Who video, the next day there are many more Who videos suggested. I don’t need more. It gets so irritating having to go to my library and delete videos that I watched and don’t want more of.

The worst example is word correction on your phone/computer/tablet. It knows who I am, why can’t it know that the way that I type makes me spell it as ot and fix it. Why can’t it look at the context of my sentence and correctly fix what I misspelled rather than substituting words that are so far removed.

In an earlier post, La Contessa (i.e., @Morrighan) referenced Alan Turing and AI. I’ll spare everyone the details since my wife often reminds me that I have an extraordinary ability to bore people, but Mr. Turing set out both the principles and the levels of so-called artificial intelligence in a follow up to “On Computable Numbers”. If anyone has ever heard of The Imitation Game - the game, not the movie, that is what Turing described as Level 1. We are still a VERY long way from achieving Level 1.

The unfortunate reality of today’s AI is it consists of solving simultaneous equations of multi-variants and relabeling Mathematics as Artificial Intelligence. This effort is generally led by marketing people who have no idea how to solve y=mX+b. Moreover, they have no idea who Alan Turing is and how his contributions effected the world.

Cracking the Nazi code during WWII was one of Turing’s many accomplishments.

In 1949 E.J. James proposed a two knob passive tone circuit. In 1952, P.J. Baxandall extended it to an active circuit. Today, many call James’s circuit a Baxandall tone stage. Baxandall had way better public relations people. The James tone circuit is used in Ampeg and many other amplifiers.

The term AI is indeed nothing but a marketing tool. It isn’t enough to have a good idea. You have to sell your concept if you want it to be successful.

In general, I see mathematicians that don’t know how to make a proof sexy. What they do only tends to appeal to other mathematicians. One problem is that they are usually many, many years ahead of any practical applications.
