Just fed the parking meter for someone parked right in front of where I'm taking coffee now. The parking meter troll gives me stinkeye when he sees me do that.

The advantage of the phone app is that you can see your remaining time and extend it from any location. The disadvantage of the app is that it’s no cash, only credit cards. Big brother can track you.

Busy day today. Spent most of the morning on the Foggy Day arrangment. Intro, head, solo section backgrounds, and coda done. About halfway done with the melody line for the horn soli section. I'm sure it will change - lol.

Gave bass lesson to a 30-something bass player who has been in the school combo for a couple of semesters. He plays pretty well but new to jazz, reading music, and relating song form to printed music. Worked on his plucking hand technique a little, too. Needs to play with a lighter touch and use the meat of his fingers instead of the tips to cut down on the popping string noise. I may have freaked him out a little last week. There's a chance I will have to miss the performance on 7/23 so he needs to be able to play all of the tunes.

My college education and 33 yrs in IT finally paid off today. I imported contacts to the new phone but none of them would show up for use on a text message...what the? Deleted, reimported, same thing. Manually added a contact and it's okay. What the? Went to google contacts and phones aren't there either. Wasn't obvious the other day or I was stupid and didn't notice it (probably the latter). The export from the old phone to a CSV put the phones, emails, etc., all in a generic column with the phone no. column google needs blank. Geez. I had to manually add a contact to google then export a CSV to see where they want it. Okay got that figured. Open the old phone CSV in Open Office then search/replace the generic column with blanks except for the phone. Copy the phone to the google phone column and clear the generic column. Go to new phone and import again. Fixed! Although I am disappointed I didn't get to write another executive complaint.

Okay, back to the arrangement...

I don't get postcards. Every time that I receive one, what I usually take away from it is "HA-HA!, I'm on vacation and you aren't". It seems that they send postcards because they have nothing better to do.

KT was Vonnegut's creation. But Farmer took it as a pen name once, apparently in homage to Kurt (and possibly Theodore Sturgeon).

Well, I thought about what happened yesterday and what it means to be a GOF and why we are who we are.

The story is two-fold.

Back in the '90's, way before I was a GOF (actually, I was 40), I ordered a sub-woofer for my truck at Circuit City. The procedure was, you ordered it in the Audio Department and then proceeded to Customer Service to pick it up. The "kid" behind the counter took my receipt and presented me with the box. In the process, he ask "Is this for you?". I said "Yes, why do you ask?". He said, "Well, we usually sell these to much younger people". I frowned and went on my way, not surprised when they went belly-up a short time later.

Fast-forward to yesterday, 33 years later. I am at BestBuy getting a new stereo installed in a new/used truck. While discussing radio reception with the "young" installer, I told him I wasn't that interested in radio because of the lack of good music and too many commercials. I told him I preferred Apple CarPlay and the ability to play my own music from my iPhone.

He responded, "Most elderly people still prefer loading CD's and can't be bothered to convert them to their iPhones", to which I bit my tongue and said, "I am not one of your elderly people and have over 7 hours of my good music on my iPhone".

I don't know why there are youngsters out there who think older people cannot adapt. Most of us are wondering why they can't (grump, grump).

Geez, Souly! Don't you know how to take a backhanded compliment? That's the ill-mannered whippersnappers' way of saying, "Wow, you're really 'with it', man!" "Good for you, living in the modern world!", without sounding too condescending (or complimentary).

You shoulda come back with sumpin' like, "Yeah, next I'll be gettin' Bluetooth for my hearing aids*!" Then they'da given you that deer-in-the-headlights look, not knowing what to say.



*one of my GOF friends has BT hearing aids connected to his smartphone and it's sometimes hard to tell if he's talking to me or on the phone!
