I guess I’ve bbeen fortunate there...I’ve had/had blood pressure, failing remaining kidney, bout with cancer, prostate the size of a medium lemon...but no sugar problems.

All my sugar problems had 2 legs and ...well... you know...

My youngest has pancreatic scarring asa side effect of Cystic Fibrosis. The CF also screws up his digestion, which further complicates the management of his diabetic symptoms.

As we recently discovered, repeated marginal lows over a number of weeks can mess up your blood chemistry and set you up for catastrophic seizures.

He’s only had the one, but it was touch and go. Definitely the most terrifying thing I’ve ever experienced.

We’re MUCH more liberal/careful with the glucose testing now.

My heartfelt commiserations on your youngest's medical struggles. It's particularly hard to see in our own progeny, as we often almost live it with them.

I was aghast when my grandson became a Type 1 diabetic, and at retirement I became his secondary caretaker. But I still didn't really understand the consequences until becoming Type 2 myself, and further immersing myself in the educational information.

I used to think my daughter was too liberal with her son's diet, leading to higher BGLs and A1Cs. But, the more we talked, and the more I read, I came to understand the more deadly risks of low BGLs and A1Cs. It's certainly a delicate balancing act! But I now agree with her which side to err on.

Wal-mart has the cheapest meters and test strips I've found. At just pennies per test, it's worth it to know where your blood glucose level is so you can act appropriately. When, not if, mine gets worse I'm gonna get a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) that graphs BGLs on it's little screen to see trends of going low or high.

Wal-mart has the cheapest meters and test strips I've found. At just pennies per test, it's worth it to know where your blood glucose level is so you can act appropriately. When, not if, mine gets worse I'm gonna get a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) that graphs BGLs on it's little screen to see trends of going low or high.

I'll have to check that out. Mine costs about $30 for a small pack of strips.

Between the Ontario Health Plan and my company benefit package my Diabetes stuff is fully covered.

My new Cardiologist is very happy with my stress Test. The bypasses are working as they should and although a third artery is still restricted, the blood flow to the right of my heart is still getting through. He wants to see me again same time next year.

Ron, one of my friends and neighbours, Is fighting Liver Cancer. His wife Cheryl called today to say they will be unable to attend our christmas Party on Saturday. She started weeping which broke my heart. Ron is no unable to walk so I offered the loan of a wheelchair we have had in the garage since our son moved out. A couple of months ago, whilst my Dorothy was having problems getting about, I got the thing down and, seeing that the nylon tyres were falling to pieces, I replaced them all. Dorothy never used the chair but now Ron can.

Did I mention that I hate these “Golden Years” as the pile o’ crap they really are!!!!

Sad news just came in. We lost our friend Ron at about noon. In a way I’m relieved. That was not a life Ron would have wanted for himself or for Cheryl his wife. As tonight is our Christmas party, I will raise a toast for him. Can’t think of anything else to do that would be meaningful.

Here’s another take on the “Golden Years”

Let me introduce you to my Dad:

He’s 88, turning 89 in January.

He takes no medication other than something for arthritic pain in one of his knees.

Cuts his own grass and still loves to garden. Clears the snow out of his driveway with a snowblower and shovels his walks. Looks after a couple of other driveways on his street as well.

He shops with me every week. Not for his groceries ... for mine. He comes along for something to do.


He still drives and leaves his house at 6:00 a.m., pretty much every morning for a daily excursion along the lake to hook up with his fishin’ buddies that are all at least 40 years younger than him. He texts back and forth with these guys, giving them fish reports at their favourite spots. He catches a LOT of fish: rainbow, salmon, perch, crappie ... caught a 34” Muskie about a month ago.

He LOVES old time country music and goes to a couple of jams/dances regularly. He has a blast! He’s the only guy that dances and has four or five babes that he dances with. He has told them all: “I have been married three times and I have no intentions of going for number four”. We were both splitting our guts, laughing, when he told me about one of the “girls” that slipped him her phone number and asked him to call when he had the time.

So there you have it, another take on the golden years.

There are plenty of folks like that! Most aren’t musicians though. Although I’ve met my fair share of pickers, singers, etc that are way up there still chugging and getting it done vertically and horizontally...

So much is frame of mind my dad used to tell me...up til the time his mind went for a walk and never came back. I envy that mindset-Never got the hang of it.

I ended up not toasting Ron as before I knew it it was past Two and most folks had gone home. <sigh> Why do good parties take so long to plan and prepare for but last such a short time?

At least our football team won the MLS cup. That makes two we have with the Argo’s Grey Cup win for Canadian Football League. Now we need the same performance from Basketball’s Raptors and Hockey’s Maple Leafs.

I never wore a cup playing football, but I did catching in baseball. Oddly, when you need a cup, and you actually use the cup, like if a batter gets maybe 10% of the top of a fastball, it feels like you forgot it. Can't imagine what that feels like without.

Anyway, where's the mixer review? I was at Sam Ash today and looking at a few used Mackies, about the same price and were full width, all metal chassis, zillion channeled things. I wonder if those are good. Look old. Anyone know about those?

please Don’t buy a used Mackie...they were built to be thrown away after reaching a certain age (like most of us) and really cost more to repair than to get a new one...

Just one opinion.

I’m THIS CLOSE to dumping 1300 into a 16 channel digital mixer with more flexibility, sound quality, and routing than I could have had for literally 10 times that just a few years back...and it fits in a small backpack...

Thanks Ken... Steering clear of those. They look like they were used on a farm for 40 years. So many channels was the only attraction. New with half the channels also has effects and usb in/out. If mackie was good before they went disposable the two I saw might reach back that far. Even then it could be an endless hassle to get pots and stuff clean. Corn dust.
