I'd have to go back and do some research, but I think some of the very early Chevy (and perhaps other brand) straight sixes that actually had 4 main bearings (with the connecting rods split 2, 2 and 2 between them). However, your recollection of more modern technology designs is spot on IME. We'll forego the discussion on 2 and 4 bolt mains and some of the more interesting connecting rod designs where they actually crack the forged lower end to form perfect mating half surfaces as opposed going with precision cut halves.On a 2, 4, 6 or 8 cylinder in-line engine, it's going to be an odd number of mains, for a 6 cylinder, 7 is the gold standard. Front and back main and a main between each cylinder. V type engines can share mains between opposing cylinders (the offset of the cylinder banks is a rod journal width), so a V6 would be front, back, and one between the first and second bank and another between the second and third bank, 4 total. A V8 would add another for 5 total. V type engines typically will have larger main journals (and maybe more bearing cap bolts) because they are carrying the load of more cylinders.

I had an F150 with a big inline 6, fuel injected 300 CID. Solid motor, but not very fuel efficient. Pulled loads very nicely.

Oops! I thought your question was on when Ford went to FI on most of their truck engines...so much for displaying good situational awareness and being on point...I was asking what year ancientpony's truck was. I had a '85 Chevy K10 which had the first non-straight-6 base motor (350 with two cylinders sawed off LOL) and was the last carbureted one. I know Ford stuck with the straight six a few more years...
