Get off my LAWN! "Grumpy Old Farts"

Checking in with all limbs and associated appendages counted for.

I feel like a true GOF having attended a metal festival on the weekend and only enjoying two bands there - one a national act who have played from the 1980s, a great rocking band called "Peer Günt"

THe other band ended the festivities, and in 1974 or 1975 it would have been the ultimate experience for the teenage Rust_Preacher... Uriah Heep. Mick Box is still on guitar, all other original members are either deceased or retired...

But, really, what made me grumpy was the company I was with. I won't go into details but I thought I was going there with my son and his fianceé's father but there ended up being a lot of other people as well. First of all, I wasn't aware of the extent of the gathering, second, their smoking and drinking distracted me from the music. So I decided to go to first row for the bands. Fortunately I had my hi-fi earplugs with me.

And, since my son's fianceé was there as well, my wife ended up taking care of my son's two daughters from his previous marriage as well as their newborn. I felt that my son's time would have been better spent with his daghters that he sees every other week, than going to a metal festival. I felt a bit used, I realize now, as I was being the justification for the whole thing. Do I make sense?

This story oddly relates to yours in a different way. About 8 years ago I told Carey that Harry Connick, Jr. was going to be in Portland on such and such date. She agreed to go and after buying the tickets, she told me to hold off on the plane tickets. I did, and it got closer and closer. She finally said that one of the kids really wanted to go to the concert so I PDF'ed the tickets and emailed them to her. It turns out she never used the tickets and I lost $200. I was so burned by that.

To this day, every day at noon Harry Connick Jr. is on TV when i walk in for lunch. I immediately turn off the channel and delete the recording. And Carey doesn't say a word. She knows why. I wish she had told me she didn't want to go and I would have gone alone. As far as the lying daughter, I told her never to ask for any tickets from mom or me again, the answer is automatically no. I hope they both regret their bit of foul deed. Now it's my job as a grown up to put that behind me, but burn me once, shame on them. Burn me twice shame on me.

It seems to be a thing with this generation of using parents willy nilly without consideration or respect. I won’t go into our misadventures with our two sons. Suffice to say there has been no contact for years and a lot of dirty tricks and hurt before. :rollno:

There is no disappointment like that from your own children whom you love and wish the best for. In my case it was my spiteful, vindictive ex who twisted our childrens' minds against me (and, unfortunately, all common sense). My resignation to this mental abuse in their youth was taken as guilt, when I only sought to spare them the full-blown wrath of their bi-polar mother in a hopeless legal action.

But, now in their 40s, our children have lived on their own enough to make their own judgements and, fortunately, find common sense. Now, I'm the grandparent invited to family events, and the ex is dutifully, but begrudgingly, visited in the nursing home at proper occasions like Mother's Day & Christmas. Her conniving, manipulative behavior is brushed aside and pitied, but kept at arm's length.

I've been blessed, after suffering many years and many tears, praying for this day to come.

I empathize with those still enduring children's disdain through misunderstanding and I pray for your reunion and resolution.

Sorry to hear of that story. Missing that concert for that reason would be very upsetting for sure. A few years back I won tickets to see Tom Petty and Joe Cocker up the Gorge in George Wa. We ended giving the Tickets to my then Teenage son and a friend. My wife didn't want to go really but My son got to see two Great people. Now they are both gone.

Looking way, way back in this thread reminded that I'm G.O.F. #25. That makes me feel, er...grumpier and older.

As a reminder, not only do I demand that you get off my lawn (and driveway), I warn you not to touch my bass or my amp or my microphone. And if you want to get up and perform with my band...sorry. Come back when there's an open mic night. Sadly, I'm not gigging any more, but if I was.....;)

P.S. Don't even park in front of my house.

M. M.

After venting on my lost concert tickets I’m saddened by my behavior. My wife and kids are far more valuable than a night at a concert.

Life is full of challenges. It’s how you deal with them that defines your character. Recognizing your failures is the fist step. Life is too short to hold onto negative things in life. Lift yourself above that. I promise that you will feel better.

There is a philosphy called Descartes Exercises that I find helpful.

At the end of each day, you meditate on the events of the day, identify where you failed, and examine how you could have better handled situations. Both in your actions and your thoughts. This helps you to be better prepared to deal with the challenges of the next day. It really works.

Be the one to extend your hand out.

Wish me luck, today we start with a different show "Legend of the American Mustang" which involves galloping a wild caught Mustang while at the same time ponying another horse next to me... all to music (with a good bass line) of course ;)

IME, if parents act lovingly with respect towards their kids, eventually they may come around despite being brain washed by others.

You may have to put up with a lot but staying the course by controlling your own behavior is key to maintaining a decent relationship with your children.
