Once you get down to the lowest notes, being slightly"off"is almost indiscernible. By putting my foot in the bell, it flatted the low Bb to an A(G concert), close enough that with all the other horns(4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 5 other reeds-saxes and clarinets)and somewhat less than digital quality recording(1967)it "cut the mustard". Sax men have been using the "partially cover the bell to flat the low Bb" trick for decades.The "low A" Baritone sax is a relatively recent development(35-40 years). Because the Bari is an Eb instrument, low Bb=concert Db. With many pieces being done in C, it left the Bari-often the lowest pitch horn in a big band-not low enough to provide a good foundation. This is why many big band arrangements were/are in concert Db-not the best key for guitar/bass. By making the low A Bari sax available, arrangements can be written in C and sound solid. Obviously, using a Bass sax instead of a Bari would alleviate the situation. However, big bands traditionally use 2 Altos, 2 Tenors and the Bari, so arrangements would have to be rewritten. Plus which, a Bass sax will run one about $25K and up. You can get a decent low A Baritone sax for $1400. AFA losing volume, that depends on your lungs. And now you know more about low range saxes than you ever wanted to know. BTW, the Bass sax is not the lowest pitch saxophone. The contrabass sax is 1 octave lower than a Bari, There's one that's an octave lower than the Bass sax-the subcontrabass sax-and there's a thing called a tubax which goes lower than the bottom notes on a piano. Google it. They're weird.
