The moss layer is packed on to help retain moisture. I actually like the look better without the moss. I might peel that off in a few weeks, remove some of the soil built up around the roots and try to get that smaller. You might not see it in the pics, but the tree is alive and well, with small buds all over. Harvested from my driveway and de-foulaged about a week ago.

The one with the split root is bigger and looks stronger. A solid prospect for a Bonsai next year. So I chickened out and use the smaller. I'm glad I did, because it was tough getting the roots in the hole with the smaller one.

I used a pipe screen over the drain hole to keep the dirt in, and probably will use a syringe to feed and water it, so maybe this is drug related and not a GoodExample
