I'm on Maui right now, nothing yet, not even rain. Did put a bit of a damper on the vacation though. I have friends on the big island (sound guy who worked at my shop in CA about 30 years ago) that are much more worried, they have battened down the hatches tight, fortunately no sound gigs for him this week. Sure glad I visited him last time!

I recommend an extensive margarita shootout at Milagro's in Paia, right on the main corner on Baldwin Ave. They used to get their limes from my drummer friend when he lived on a plantation between Hookipa and the Jaws mega-break.

Been gone a while, can't sit at my computer desk because of a wicked case of Sciatica. After losing pretty much my whole summer, I'm finally getting some relief from a mixture of massage, physio, TENS and moist heat.

He's in a small town about 10 minutes from the beach, and supposedly not in a flood zone.

What helped my wife:
1) thick flip flops around the house

2) new shoes every 6 months so(every three months when working out) including gel inserts

3) adjustable Tempurpedic bed that allows legs to be raised; more consistent position than pillows

4) blue-silicon chair "pillow"

Sorry, the only hurricane advice I have, from several experiences, is evacuate!! Get as far from that sucker's path as fast as you can. Sorry that doesn't help on those (relatively) little islands.

A steel reinforced concrete building should be fine, if it's got a good roof! I was once in such a building that just had a flimsy tin roof, and it started peeling off the building when the winds got high. So, in the midst of hurricane Wilma in Cancun, we had to evacuate the topless building into buses that went to various stout little schoolhouses. A week later we got rejoined with the main group of tourists into a small university campus. A week after that we found an American Consolate rep who bused some of us to the airport in Merida. After a couple days at the airport we finally lucked onto a plane headed home!!

Listen to and follow local authorities' directions. Hurricanes are infrequent in Hawaii, but they do have tsunami warning systems and, presumably, emergency management plans.

...and in twelve weeks you’ll be able to walk around the block. Some time later, rock around the clock. It does get more bearable.

Avoid relatives coming to town. Stress is not good.

Pretty much just do what they say. They told us to tape big "X's" on our windows, but that didn't work for the local huts, just on base. Then just stay indoors and ride it out. I'll bet the boys in gator land have more experience and better advice on US housing. Sounds like you're in a good spot. Hope your area is not hit hard!

As a native Floridian who's been through a Lot of hurricanes in 73 years, the X tapes are only helpful to the tape manufacturers. Just like tornados, get to an inner room, have mattresses to put over you, try to listen to weather broadcasts and wait 'til it's over.

I can whole heartedly back up what @GonePlaid says. Tape is no real help at all. Much of the damage in a "Caine" is the result of tornadoes that spin off the big storm.
Try to take care, it's very very nerve wracking!
