Tuesday evening I went outside and the smell of skunk was super intense. Assumed a skunk was around, and put the dog inside. Outside the smell was still intense, but fading…
Quickly, I went inside to inspect the dog. Didn't have to get too close as the smell (nothing like you smell when passing by a dead skunk in the road) had engulfed the house. This almost smelled like burning plastic; in fact when I first got the whiff, that what I thought it was… but obviously, it couldn't be-- unless it was right at my feet
It was freezing cold but I bathed dog twice with Hydrogen Peroxide, second time pinpointing the spray spot (top of head). It killed most of it… but if you put your nose close to Duke's head, you can still smell it.
As luck would have it, Marm, came home without his choke collar and I improvised with a lead…
You'd think an animal like a dog who's sense of smell is well beyond our own would assist one in any effort to be rid of it…. NOPE!
I had to rough house him quite a bit to get the job done.
He's finally forgiven me today; for two days he wouldn't look at me.

7-8 weeks is the perfect time to wean, so when you adopt, the dog will have the strongest bond with the person
who cares for it.
Pups are not self maintained, if you want to prevent problems you must dedicate the time.
Just like raising a child, 1st thing when they get up, they must go, if that's 4:00 AM you have to get up and walk them.
Once they have a spot outside that is acceptable, keep taking them to the same area.
In good hands, they truly are man's best friend.

A dog like that can be a handful my friend,
As a grown adolescent , STRONG and maybe too much pull for a small child.
They may adore the children but not know their own strength.
With kids strongly recommend a female.
Females stay put with the family, boys wander looking for mates.

I've always heard tomato juice was a good neutralizer for skunk perfume but have never tried it. Hopefully never will either!! The military could use that stuff to clear a battlefield!!!!!

Actually I saw both tomato juice and butter milk as recommended for primary soaking, but there were also recommendations
for original Blue Dawn, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda.

Also recommendations for lemon juice.

Buttermilk has enzymes that help break down odors.

They did say depending on severity of the spray, the dogs' coat and how many times you bath them, the smell can still stay with them
for a year if they get damp.

In all seriousness, every male dog I've owned was hell bent on finding a way to roam.

Here on 20 acres, our female poodle, shep lab and now my Jack Russell, have all stayed right near the house, never needed a leash, and don't wander far. They are the guardians of family, children and the stupid cats against all foes and wild critters.

My neighbor's pound pups. The female finally knows where she's wanted and loved and stays between my house and their's.
Their male Akita mix adolescent will bolt on a second's notice.

The hydrogen peroxide/baking soda works. He smelled like a chemical spill before the bathing. I could see a blacker than Duke oil spill over his left eye after the first application 15 minute soak… I hit that with a hard spray of water. Then I did a head only 2nd run. got rid of 98% of the stink. You have to put yoliur nose a couple of inches from his head to smell it now.
Damn dog mopes around, might try the Scope soak on his noggin'

I'll pour anything over that dog's head if it will help him; I imagine he smells it all day and night. Of course, this animal will flip on his back and try to grind in some half decomposed animal's smell into his spine…. so !

Funny "ol guy" skunk story... I was riding one of my horses around the property a few years back at a pretty good clip and coming around a mound I came up way too close to a female skunk. How did I know it was female? Well, I was THAT close. Glad my hoses stops quick and backs up fast because I wasn't thinking a horse (or ME) would be good candidate for such a bath. Fortunately, the woman I was riding with at the time just did what I did, because thet would have been a difficult situation to explain...

AllI can say about it is that we were VERY lucky that night.

Thanks for your "heads-up". I got a male because my daughter-in-law has two female dogs and the male would probably be a better match as far as family outings or such activities go. He sure is headstrong, already, and roams the edges of the property already. I have made it sniff along tracks in the snow, left by a wandering labbie, and some brown hare. I have also tried blood tracks a couple of times but he really doesn't get that activity yet, just eats the blood-spilled grass. Despite all the "positive reinforcement" ideology, I have had to pull him out of the cat litter box a couple of times by the neck, quite hard... I don't get it, cat feces are the most vicious thing on earth (as we don't have skunks here).

I have not found the tomato juice thing to work very well getting the stink out....but it works great for turning a Samoyed pink.
