I think the Buttermilk might have been a better choice.
As mentioned above, the enzymes act to break down odors.
It also works safely where some of the other methods can burn their eyes and mucous membranes.

I do know my vet still recommends original Blue Dawn as the safest for washing pets.

Thanks for your "heads-up". I got a male because my daughter-in-law has two female dogs and the male would probably be a better match as far as family outings or such activities go. He sure is headstrong, already, and roams the edges of the property already. I have made it sniff along tracks in the snow, left by a wandering labbie, and some brown hare. I have also tried blood tracks a couple of times but he really doesn't get that activity yet, just eats the blood-spilled grass. Despite all the "positive reinforcement" ideology, I have had to pull him out of the cat litter box a couple of times by the neck, quite hard... I don't get it, cat feces are the most vicious thing on earth (as we don't have skunks here).

I don't think anyone really understands why dogs do that.
Is it because they are removing an offending odor or is it a yummy treat?
I've had dogs who like to roll in deer droppings.
The only thing that made a bit sense there was an attempt to camouflage their own sent for hunting?

So you just shoot the dog instead of a tomato juice bath? That thought has occurred to me too...and I've told the dog so.

My father did the only human thing he could do.

That's exactly the reason. I've seen spitz-type dogs do that on the way to a moose hunt.
