I sometimes use a thumb pick as well as the other three.
I got that but also took it as a leadin to another bit.

I started with fingers, playing bg music in a trio. Once I started playing rock(69), I used fingers on some, pick on others-mostly for speed. Through the 70s and 80s, I continued using both methods. After that mostly fingers to now where my hand cramps up playing with a pick. Still use one occasionally but mostly for extra punch.

I've tried over the years to use a thumb pick on acoustic guitar but it just seemed so clumsy. Or rather me being clumsy.
Never tried one on bass though. May grab one next time I'm at a local shop and give it a try.

I tried one and liked it but even though it's the largest size, the thing cuts off circulation in my fat thumb.

Yeah that was one of the things that bugged me about them. I suppose they have to be fairly tight though.
I never really gave them a chance.

Yes, it takes some getting used to a thumb pickand this is where size matters. I use this with a Rickenbacker 12 string when fingerpicking. I find that delrin picks made by Fred Kelly Picks | Fred Kelly Custom Guitar Picks! work well. The plastic is softer and glides over the strings with less noise.
Some people use acrylic fake nails because their natural nails wear down. I’ve never tried that, way too much maintenance for me. I know that McCartney does this for guitar.

Ah, you know I have one of those Kelly speed pics around here somewhere that someone gave me about 10 years ago at a Bluegrass Jam. I'll have to hunt for that and give it a try.

Good morning GOF's! A belated ROLL CALL! Front and center brothers! Report in if all toes fingers and appendages are accounted for. It's pretty cold here in Sitka so all Carey and I can do today is work inside and tidy up. I bought Carey a movie called "A Walk With a White Dog" starring Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy. Tonight is movie date night complete with snacks. Maybe a little snuggling due to the cold..
What say ye, GOF's? What do you have planned for the weekend? Last week bro @BadExample dropped the gauntlet with a Youtube vid from the Navy. I answer that challenge with my own video of the 8" Howitzer unit I was assigned to in the Army in Baumholder, Germany in the 1970's. We were 'tactical nuclear capable' which means we could fire off 8" nuclear rounds for a small atomic burst.
Oops! Typed and forgot to post. No gigs this weekend, went to visit daughter in Orlando yesterday, back home today to do.......nothing. All appendages still functioning-sort of. Planning to go see a TB member Sunday at local(Stuart, FL)outdoor venue.
Present , all appendages accounted for and happier than a seagull with a french fry about my new band. Did two gigs this weekend. They both went great , crowds were good and the dance floors were filled. We were amazed that anyone came out for tonights gig. It was snowing , they were calling for three to six inches but we pulled a better crowd at the venue than I've seen some folks pull on a night where the weather is good. Fortunately , the gig was pretty close to home for me. It was about a fifteen minute drive to the gig before it started snowing. Took me almost an hour to get home. The roads were awful. I passed on my usual stop at McDonalds. It was only a mile out of the way but I was done with the roads by the time I got near the neighborhood. So far only an inch or two but the roads were freezing as soon as the snow hit them and it was all back roads so the salt trucks haven't made it to them yet. Next gig is early Feb. so I have a couple of weeks off to bone up on new songs. We also have a couple of festival gigs booked in early spring that pay VERY well. Sheeesh , hope I don't lose my grump card over all this.

Settling into our new digs with my daughter and her family. Catching up on paperwork and setting up my PC. I have a Surface Pro but the PC has a ton more convenient connections that get used for headphones, external DVD, external HD backup, microphone. It has a direct connect to the router as well. May add a SS drive. It keeps up with video pretty well.
More importantly, celebrated my main squeeze's birthday today with a family dinner and family fun. 45 years together trying to figure out life and each other.
Still working on that. Anyways, hope all is going well or well enough for my TB bros.

We took about 8 inches of snow last night and today. Two volunteers sensibly stayed home, one came in. When she tried to leave at 2, her Audi was helpless in the driveway. The shelter is 50 yards from my house, so I was available. I had to roll out my old Ram 4x4 and hook a chain on, drag the little Quatro loose, then lead her a mile to the blacktop so she could drive in my tracks.
Here comes the GOF...why would someone who lives in this part of the country be driving a Quatro in a snowstorm? How can they not know better? I havent owned anything what wasnt 4x4 and at least 4000# since 1969. There is a reason why in this neighborhood (ok, rural route) the pickup trucks outnumber the coon hounds. It's not just that they hold more feed sacks.
