Get off my LAWN! "Grumpy Old Farts"

Only the observation that "like" and "pun" are rarely used together.

There is a story of a home for aged and aging punsters Mark Twain published in an anthology of humor. There are strict rules, particularly regarding dinner table etiquette. Every pun possible about meals played out long ago for these GOFs to the point where the rules were necessary to keep order.

Also, I recall, the home for aged and aging punsters was men only. The writer's premise was women are incapable of a pun ....

<sigh>

Right. Some many many many pages ago someone or multiple someones requested a boarding school story.

We are discussing The Great Gatsby. Standard 11th form stuff [then]. In the halcyon days when most of the girls owned a copy of Richard Brautigan's poems. <ahem> Never mind that. Horrible. Yes, The Great Gatsby.

It's the scene at the end of the novel where he's looking out over the bay and sees two green lights on the two docks. We are asked what the meaning of this may be. (We are getting learned about metaphors.) Raise hand. He calls on me.

A pair of docks.

Lucky not to have been expelled on the spot.
Nice!

Chronic nerve pain is a hard road to travel
that isn’t as expressed, with a lyric-ah.

Any help?
Exercise, proper stretching, walking, low salt, lots of water ....

Not for everyone, nothing is, but acupuncture helped me defeat a longstanding problem with my knees (thanks, Sam:rollno:), and get past a longstanding need for heavy opiates.

So many suffer from the effects of opiates. Any alternative is more desirable.

With sciatica, pressure points really make a difference. Push in the right spot and I feel it down my leg into my foot. Relaxing muscles that impinge on that spot helps me tremendously.

I keep hearing about how acupuncture helps.

That sort of thing can respond to acupunture, though as I said, it doesnt work for everyone. In my case, 20 years of increasing dose of codiene was replaced with zero pain meds after a 6 month course of acupuncture.

My wife has had chronic back pain that responded well to home use of a TENS unit, and the prices have come down massively on those. Big problem with using it for back pain is the need to have someone else attach the pads for you.

It took 17 months of massage, accupuncture, and chiropractic to fix a muscle strain and its aftermath.

I did the massage and accupuncture for eleven months and after they got it to a point where it only hurt when I moved, I switched to chiro for six months. Saved my life.

Happy Soulful Sunday...

Written for Aretha in 1967. How could you better pair a song with an artist. The song was written in a day.

When Carole King's Tapestry came out, my wife bought a copy. She wore out the vinyl playing it. If you left the record players arm, that allowed you to stack albums, the record would repeat when it came to the run out groove. At least it was better than Bob Dylan’s grating voice all day long.

At the time Tapestry and Ms Magazine, a liberal feminist magazine went hand in hand in influencing young women.

At the time, Carole King was living in Laurel Canyon in LA. A lot of musicians lived in the area. Our House by CSN was about a house that Joni Mitchell shared with Graham Nash. Zappa lived there. The Mamas & The Papas lived there. What a place to live. There are still fancy recording home studios there.

The Aretha version of the song was recorded at American Sound Studios in Memphis. A lot of hit came out of that studio.

Three Franklin sisters were on the original 1967 recording of this song. Erma (her biggest hit was Piece Of My Heart) and Carolyn sang backup along with Cissy Houston.

That song was destined for greatness.

Speaking of pairing a song with an artist…Happy Soulful Sunday!

I like the organ in this song. They often used instruments in musically creative ways. Sylvester became syl when he was a DI and radio announcer. People in radio back then used tape machines to create art for their shows. Their songs had that radio commercial sound.

They also knew how to write the kind of songs that radio stations wanted. Hooks that keep their audience listening and not switch the station off. Songs at the time were written for AM radio. Progressive FM stations changed things. They played albums and long songs more so than hits.

The piano elevates this performance, played by Larry Knechtel, a top session musician in LA, bassist and member of the Wrecking Crew. Phil Spector used them. He played bass on the Doors first album, was in Bread.

Bass on this song was covered by Joe Osborn. Joe by the way, discovered the Carpenters.

The music for this song was recorded in LA, the final vocals were done in NY.

Completely OT, I watched a TV series episode in which some people were investigating some text messages on another person's phone. They were amazed that one of the texters seemed to be asking the location of a Wireless Telecommunications Facility. I 'bout lost it.:roflmao:

Where would investigators be today if they didn’t have a suspect’s social media to look into.

Some parents register a web site when their children are born. Their entire life is digitally captured. I don’t get the need to document life rather than live it. I see tourists intent on photographing historic buildings. They click and rush on, never seemingly taking the time to take in the moment.

Cell phones are a distraction, they are banned in some schools.

In business, younger people attend meetings with their phones and computers and spend their time dinking on the phones. When asked if they understand their assigned tasks, they ask you to repeat, they were “multi-tasking”. They are usually on social media. They don’t care if they get let go as a result. Their friends are more important.
