If you ever feel like trying your luck in Northern OR/Southern WA I know a very experienced guide with a nice drift boat. But yeah, the salmon runs are pretty dire at the moment in my neck of the woods. As far as local eating I tend to prefer steelhead, personally. I basically stopped fishing when I moved to the west coast, but fly fishing for steelhead sure does look like a cool thing.

Thanks, @Passinwind, I will definitely keep that in mind. Up to this month, my wife and I had been spoiled for the last 12 years. We had a permanent RV spot on a lake a little over an hour from our house. The plan was to retire there as our 5th wheel and 16' Jetcraft was extremely accommodating and the rent was attractive. Too bad the owners, who we were friends with, decided to sell. The new owners decided they wanted the site for themselves and gave us 1 1/2 months notice . Since towing the trailer and the boat is out of the question, we are now looking at a smaller class C motorhome. The benefit is being able to see and fish new places.

I have found that steelhead are the hardest fighting fish in fresh water! I have also found that the taste of any fish is dependent upon what they are eating and the temperature of the water. Trout, for example, can be "muddy" tasting if they are caught in warmer water and feeding on leeches, or so I have experienced. Steelhead prefer chad and other small minnows, a fly that resembles them would be a fighting experience .

Yep, I've camped along the Deschutes with long time fly fishermen and can definitely see the attraction. Most of my fishing as a misguided yoot was for striped bass and bluefish, both of which are pretty serious fighters.

The Columbia gets quite warm mid-summer, so Springers are often much better eating than the fall runs IME. We just get Alaskan salmon most of time in any case. The nearest Costco to us just started doing seafood for real and my wife picked up a killer small whole Copper River salmon for the 4th, and we have several left over steaks in the freezer at the moment. Steelhead around here typically come from the very cold clean water of the various feeder rivers and are great eating any time.

Yeah I stopped looking at that thread. Lime goes well with gin and tonic water. They served that in frappe glasses at Maddy's in the early 70s but pretty sure I don't know how to get to Marblehead without a guide.

Funny story. I always look at my phone b4 answering. If I-or the phone-don't recognize the number, I don't answer. The robocallers don't leave voicemails. If it's a 'real' call I call right back and say"sorry, I couldn't get to the phone".

That's kinda strange. The only robos that leave messages start talking while my outgoing message is playing so I never hear wuttinahell they're threatening me with anyway. Then I hit "ignore".

Prolly because of all the retirees-including me-that are in S FL, the TV news folks are constantly warning people about these scam calls and that the IRS, FBI, PD, computer makers, etc. don't call to warn you or to pay fees. People still fall for it.

In the Elder Times before caller ID, perchance I might ask a telephone scammer "can you hold a moment, please, while I turn off the stove?" Put the receiver down and .... wait. The record before they hung up approached 30 minutes.

I started getting incessant calls multiple times a day for quite a while from my phone company.

It turns out that they have a legal office. I sent them a cease and desist email asking that my number be removed from their call list for as long as I have the number. Worked like a charm.
