A cool morning on one of our trails, Mosquito Cove. Beautiful, cool morning. @Passinwind

Weren't you just pledged to an air conditioner hunt?
In the fall, when we get our Alaska Permanent Fund checks, we're flying to Juneau (Mt. Pilot) and purchasing two air conditioners from Home Depot or a similar hardware store. We'll have them installed next spring. Now that we're back home from our hike, it's getting humid and warm. Very unlike Sitka's weather this time of the year.

So, how were the mosquitos?

They were still sleeping. They like to torture humans after 11:00am or so...

Is the water too cold for people to swim in?

Yes, leads to hypothermia within 15 minutes. We do have a sandy beach where the beach stays shallow quite some distance out and the water's warmed by the sand... People go there to bathe. But go out 100 feet or more, it gets rather cool...

...and how big are they?

You can see their teeth when they smile! actually they're a bit bigger than the mosquitos I've seen in Washington and Oregon. Didn't you know the mosquito is the Alaska State Bird? :D

As usual Mr. @SoulReflection an excellent Soulful Sunday choice!

I stand corrected about the water temperature. Evidently thanks to global warming even our water is getting warmer....

Much colder than I'll voluntarily venture. Swimming is for getting out of the water.

The military in conjunction with Isreal recently carried out some new technology tests recently in Alaska. Did you have to duck and cover?

I wondered what those skinny birds were flying overhead!
Back in the 60's when we were still at cold war with the USSR, the military was testing nuclear bombs in the Southwest Alaska. They started on an island called Amchitka. When they were done testing, they renamed the island Amka. Why? Because the military blew the 'chit' out of it! :roflmao:

I am reminded of my trip to Anchorage back in the '80's. After my business with the City, I booked a seaplane trip to the remote Kenai Peninsula to spend a weekend salmon fishing, tent and boat included. Upon approaching my destination, I suddenly realized I had reason to be concerned. I looked down out of the window and all I could see was bank to bank fishing boats. The pilot had to circle several times in order for the boats to get out of the way. From the moment I stepped out on the pontoon, I was attacked by the largest and most vicious mosquitoes I have ever seen...I spent most of the entire weekend in the tent, with bug spray, counting the hours and minutes until I could be taken out of this place.

To make matters worse, the sun never really set, so I couldn't even enjoy a nights sleep...never again!

The fish must love jumping for those large mutant mosquitoes.

Sorry you had such a bad experience. The people you were with should have provided nightshades for your tents. These attachments black out your tents at night. Also nowadays you can get tents with mosquito nets attached. There are many new ways to keep them buggers away.

Wife and I can't imagine living anywhere else than Alaska! :D

One night west of Dong Ha, a couple mosquitos jumped me in my hole. One of them held me down while the other one pulled out my dogtags. Second one says, "crap, another type B...let's go find us an O." They lifted off, causing the NVA outside the wire to fire several anti-aircraft missiles.

Couple minutes later, two more mosquitos grabbed me. Lifted me up about 3 feet. One of them says, "Shall we eat him here, or take him in the trees?" His partner says, "We better eat him here. If we take him in the trees the big guys will take him away from us."

Fotunately, my buddy woke up, saw what was happening, and opened up with his M16. Put half a clip into one of the bugs, which weakened him enough to make him drop me.

Our topkick demands to know why there was fire. We told him the mosquitos were trying to kill me. He says, "Wasnt there anything else you could have done?" My buddy says, "Gunny, there wasnt time for an airstrike."
