GF is the singer...band death sentence?

Is it really a death sentence to have your significant other in the band?

My girl and I have been knocking around the idea of starting a band. I'm down because she's a great singer and had the same (impeccable) tastes in music as I do. We're going forward with it, knowing that the general consensus on this type of thing is "DON'T DO IT!!!" Thoughts?

I just quit a band for this reason.

It will be great for the two of you, but sooner or later, it will be a major impediment for your band and bandmates.

It will likely lead to friction with the band, at some point it will be them and you.
Silly me, I am in a band with my wife but all the band mates are cool with it but we have a much different dynamic, she is a player not a dreaded chick singer.

Haha! I guess vocalists do kind of have a "diva" stereotype, don't they? One of my best friends from childhood started a band with his wife and another husband/wife couple that worked out great. The only reason they broke up is because half of the band moved to Chicago. It can be done and I think I can be the one to break the mold!

Seriously though, we're doing it for fun because we both love music and we just want to get out and play again. And you know...we complete each other and junk. :smug:

I played in a band with an ex girlfriend. She refused to have me in her band while we dated as she was worried about all the issues that can arise from such a thing.

We both had similar ideas for the band's direction and if it wasn't for the others in the band not pulling their weight the band would still be going.

I also played in a band with a couple - rehearsals were great fun if they'd just had a fight!

My ex-wife and I had a band in LA and did OK. And yes, she was the vocalist... All the other band members were also female. Needless to say, it didn't end well.
I'm not being sexist here, just remember that the dynamics change in such situations. :)

I voted you're nuts, sorry. This will at some point put serious stress on your relationship. What I've seen in such situations is that the guys seperate the relationship stuff from the band stuff ('in band situations I'm speaking as a band member, not as your boyfriend'), the girls ... don't. So if you're going to do this, at least make some things clear from the start.
