Gibson 2016 - no basses?

I think there's some misreading of things here, not introducing any new or updated models is not the same as we're going to stop making basses, right now, forever. They have enough inventory in the supply chain to let things sit for some time, stores still have brand new 2014 Gibson basses on the wall with the 120th anni inlays on them and big mark downs on the stickers.
I've played countless Gibson basses & never been impressed...especially when comparing them to the Pro series Epiphones beside them on the wall at a fraction of the cost.
Also the 3 point bridge is an abomination & should be erased from history...along with the PRS stop-tail.
Oooh, this I like... my original Victory's will be worth a fortune!
I bet a reissue of it would sell better today than it did back then.
thank god..gibson basses look, play, and sound like sh1t in my opinion..they should stick to overpriced guitars
It wasn't clear (to me at least) Do they mean Gibson will have no basses at all in the 2016 lineup, or no new basses. I'm assuming they mean the latter, as the former makes no sense.
Having owned a 2014 EB, I disagree with your statement. I liked the way it played and sounded. I just wasn't wild about the finish on the body.
Gibson, by their own admission, never really spent the time and energy to develop basses. If they pull out of the bass market, it's just further testament they didn't do things right
IF true, this will have no impact whatsoever on the music industry.
It'd be cool if for a whole decade, they're reproduce the Victory series, More colors for the thunderbird (in pre-2015 config), an actual EB line up (Eb-o les paul JR style, sg style, EB-1, EB-2/D for 2 pup enthusiasts, EB-3, EB-6 or wtvr their six string bass was called) all short scale. & hte les paul triumph bass too. in short scale, & all the basses like the original (with a few modernizations)
IMO, the issue is what's underneath the covers. I am a huge fan of Gibsons as long as you have money to upgrade them. I love the feel and look of a lot of the Gibson models and have owned many SG's but the pickups and electronics are shite.
What Gibson need to do, aside from drop their prices is outsource their pickups and pre's to someone who knows what they are doing.
My longtime dream bass, until I played a Yamaha BBNE2 was a Heritage Cherry SG with 2 Darkstars and a Mike Pope Pre or similar.
I think Gibson make some cool designs but are all poorly executed or are too expensive.
Let's be serious Gibson. A brand can charge a premium for their bass if there is a market for it. You have charged a premium for basses that a lot of bassist aren't that fussed on. $800-1000 for Block Inlays and some polish, are you for real?
I would love to the SG Standard drop in price, introduce a USA made Jack Casady, severely drop the price of the 335s and give us some decent Thunderbird colour options otherwise we will just keep buying Mike Lulls and Low End copies which are superior.
Also, please give us an Active Gibson SG.

I've never played a Gibson bass that I liked. The 2015 T-bird that I tried was terrible. Maybe it was a one off bad one, but it wasn't any better than the $200 Epi version. The finish on the Epi was better.
I don't get all the Gibson hate.I own 2 SG's and a Thunderbird and they are absolutely amazing in fit and finish,play wonderfully and cost less than other American made basses did when I purchased them.I don't have a single issue with any of them.I do wish Gibson would offer a few more color options, other than that I don't really have any complaints.
Imo some of the best music ever played was played on Gibsons.Creme,The Who,Kiss,Motley Crue,Lynyrd Skynyrd,Nirvana,Green Day,Jethro Tull,Tesla,Chevelle,System of a Down,Twiggy Ramirez and so on and so on.The list is almost endless and at some point they all played a Gibson.

I'm a diehard Fender fan; nevertheless, there was a comprehensive shootout on TB recently and I thought this bass walked away with the prize, sonically speaking.

I'm new to Gibson basses but over the last couple of years have really come to like them. In fact in the last 2 years I've purchased twice a many Gibsons as Fenders. When I play I reach for my Alembics, Gibsons and Spectors long before I ever reach for my Fenders.
I do find it funny that a number of posts in this Gibson bash thread suggest they should offer more colors and active preamp options and both left and right options and so on. As opposed to the Fender bash threads where many say Fender has too many options and needs to get back to just a couple different models.
