I'm looking for a bit of help on this one. I bought this about eight or nine years ago at a used music store in Ottawa, Ontario. The sign simply said "1970's Gibson". I love it, it plays beautifully, despite being dangerously close to needing a total refret. Unplugged, it resonates like no other bass I've ever played. What type of wood is this?

I always assumed it was a mid 1970's EB-0L, although I'm uncertain . It measures 34 inches from nut to saddle. The sunken bridge and jack on the bottom lead me to believe it was likely modified over the years. Not to mention the different tones of wood/ veneer. I've never come across an EB bass that looked quite like it. The stamped serial number on the headstock is illegible.

That said, I'm looking to confirm the model and modifications, perhaps year of manufacturing. I'm also curious as to what it might have looked like originally. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

Funny, I was just digging through the flyguitars site this morning. You're right the pickup looks identical. It would have been a lot of work to route and mount the control plate on the back. However, this would explain the veneer on the face.

Yup, I think you nailed it! Sounding out the wood, there seems to be a hollow area where the bridge pickup would have been. It's a shame, I would have loved to hear this with both pickups. I guess the guy just really wanted an EB-0. It still sounds great to me.

If anyone is curious, this entire recording was made on this "frankengibson". The closest thing to a clean tone is at the end. Cheers.

My 1974 Gibson L9-S Ripper. All factory original except for the strings.

My Midtown Signature came with Chromes on it. Not sure of the gauge but believe it's a .95 E string ECB80SL. Sounds wonderful so I have little deire to swap them. They go from being bright with both pickups and the tone up to thunderously low with the tone rolled off and the neck pickup only.
