Gibson Guitars raided by FBI

Forget about terrorism, robberies, rapes, violent attacks against innocent people. What's really important is cracking down on the importation of rosewood from Madagascar.
This is like when they took down Al Capone for tax evasion... We all know Gibson's real crime is producing the Les Paul. I mean c'mon - an ugly 20 lb guitar that sounds like mud and they charge about 2-3K for a well equipped model. That's robbery, somebody had to do something about these people!
At least they're going for the company that makes crappy basses. If this were Fender or Ibanez I'd be in horror right now.

this reminds me of an idea I had for a restaurant that serves exotic meats. It'd be called The Endangered Species List.
Actually that's not too far from the truth. The FBI is more concerned with high profile cases where a successful bust can be good PR and score political points. I have a friend who is living in terror because of organized threats of gang rape and murder made against her online and across state lines. The police say it's not their jurisdiction, and the FBI has said that it's not important enough for them to worry about, regardless of the fact that she's been physically attacked in the past by some of these people.
I can't put my finger on why, but this is the greatest thing I have read in a long time....especially out of context.
I was mostly talking about how that area in Nashville where the raid occurred is a high crime area. It seems the police might have more important things to do there. But what I said could be taken in more than one way.
But anyway, this thread has made me laugh very hard, with all the talk of lemur consumption and whatnot.

It's true that for some reason the thread has had an unusual number of witty people on it. Personally, I think the raid was absurd, but a number of the comments have been funny.
Aside from the burger humor, getting charged with a Lacey Act
violation will ruin your day. I know some people in the fish
biz who have plead to that and the resulting penalties and
fines weren't pretty.
But the key issue in the Lacey Act is that is illegal to import
agricultural or fishery products from another country that
is illegally harvested there.
But you still have to deal with all the legal BS.
If the foreign laws have changed and it is now legal to
harvest and export the products, then there is no violation
for importing them here under the Lacey act unless laws are
passed here to specifically prohibit such imports. An example
of that would be whale meat.

Brazilian Rosewood has skyrocketed in the last few years. In the mid nineties it was 1500-2000 up charge on Martin Guitars. It is now well over a 30,000 up-charge in the custom shop! Madagascar which is highly figured is also higher then the much more available and less figured Indian rosewood. Martin has Madagascar models for about 11,000. The unusual thing is that corresponding older models haven't seen the same inflation. A Brazilian Rosewood D-28 from the 60's in good shape is only about 3-4 grand more then a new one. ALL of Martins body woods for their premium models are aged for a long time so I doubt they're involved in this. They have a large warehouse stockpile. But I wonder if the publicity will drive up the older Martins?
