as fans of musical instruments that use this wood, shouldn't we support moves to ensure its survival and continued use?
Judging by the amount of Gibson bashing in here, I'm wondering if anyone will get mad when they find out their SX was made by 11 year-olds for $2 in Beijing...

Play your SX or Squier and be thrilled with the great deal you got. Gibson's & Ric's (and MIA Fenders) are the basses worth owning. Everything else is an also-ran.
what's got my interest peak is this endangered species list restaurant idea. beef chicken pork and fish are boring. just give me a bald eagle i'll eat the head, throw the body away, and sell the docudrama of my story to prime time cable. It would be the most patriotic meal of the decade.
Except that third world nations have to sell their scarce natural resources for whatever price core national corporations are willing to pay, which is usually criminally low i.e. the kind citizens of Madagascar aren't making dime one selling this timber.
Yeah my Whale meat guy says its getting riskier everyday. I may have to switch to Dolphin soon.

This is one of my favorite posts in this thread - because it speaks to the fact that Gibson and SX are in direct compitition. I know most guitar and bass players are are usually choosing between a $2000+ Gibson, or a $99 SX.
It's just like when I bought my last car - I was buying used and I just couldn't decide between a '08 Lexus or a '79 Yugo...
I like Brazil anyway... I like their rosewood and their waxing style. YMMV

Unless someone can come up with a price, how do you know how much they are paying for it? Madagascar may be holding up the price for us, and rolling out the cheap red carpet for them. If I was a nation money hungry for funds, I'd probably jack the price on the rich nation too.
The Olympics pushed prices up massively here. I'm constantly amazed at how large the nouveau riche population has become - kids dropping up to 15,000 yuan on a Les Paul or Warwick without batting an eyelid. There's a guy in my neighbourhood with two Lamborghinis that he keeps parked outdoors next to a construction site. Consumerism is rampant. In other parts of China $2 is a lot, here in Beijing it might cover public transport for a day and one really bad meal.
I'm glad you compared a $2000 Gibson to a Lexus and a $99 SX to a Yugo. Or is it the other way around? If it is the former, I'm sure you'd get alot of flack from SX lovers for comparing their guitar to a piece of crap car.
ALL guitars are in direct competition. Why would Gibson NOT be in direct competition with SX? They have to figure out how to hold their own against a company that (according to many tb users) has a very high quality for the price range - a quality that may even equal USA Fender basses (as one post I saw on here last week was exclaiming). How would that not be a competition? And if it can equal Fender USA, then why not Gibson?
Problem is, you're missing my point. My point was, many keep bashing Gibson, Ric, and other "expensive" basses with "poor quality control"...while surely many of the same guys who bash Gibson, Ric, etc. will advocate guitars like SX instead. Problem is, nobody recognizes that Gibson, Ric, and other USA manufacturers have to actually PAY their employees to make instruments - probably like $15 per worker more at least I'm sure. Do you know what that does to the cost to make a guitar, to have to actually have to pay someone more than a dime an hour?
Granted, I may be wrong. But I'm pretty damn sure I'm not. So why aren't we setting up threads bashing China guitar-makers for not improving worker pay and the quality of the workplace?
Answer: we're too busy being selfish, shouting "It's all about me! I want everything for less and less and less and I don't give a crap who it affects!"
Sure, some companies might jack their price. But when was the last time you saw a guitar company on a Forbes 500 list for biggest profit returns? And yet, half the companies on those lists probably do the same exact thing as those guitar manufacturers might (markup their products)...and I don't see you out picketing them. (*cough* Wal-Mart)
