Gibson Midtown Club.

Cool. I love mine and it came almost perfectly setup as well.
Even if it was priced at two grand I would have no complaints, though at that price I would prefer an ebony board!
I like it so much it makes me want a matching six string standard with bigsby. I've
always been a fan of the Les
Paul custom, but the youtube demos of these guitars rival the Paul IMO.
There is also a guy on youtube that plays it next to a 335, and the 335 does sound a little warmer and sweeter to me.
My dad sold his 335 though,
so I guess I will not be getting one of those; HaHa. But I geuss that is OK:)

Didn't get the flats; played the rounds last night. Very pleased. Got lots of compliments on both the sound and the blue color.
The Midtown notes substain much longer than my Tacoma Thunderchief. On many tunes this is good as it helps fill out the overall sound. I can see that I'm going to need to switch to the Thunderchief on some of the jazz and older Country tunes we play for closer to an upright sound. Overall...I'm like kid with a new iPhone.

Hey Folks, first post here. I got the gold Midtown Signature, threw on gold knobs and an ivory switch with the Les Paul washer. Love the bass, need to add the tape underneath the pickup cover though, getting that annoying rattling sound. The second photo shows the EB-2013 I've got as well, which I'm still not officially sold on.

Ordered these from Bass Strings Online on their recommendation for flats on this instrument. Didn't like the way they sound at all. Very weak, lost all the lows on the E string. Maybe the gauge is too small. Went back to the rounds. Much better.

Can anyone recommend strong sounding flats for the Midtown? Stay with rounds?

When I got my Midtown I absolutely made a point of putting LaBella tapewounds on that bass. I had those strings on my old Epiphone Jack Casady signature bass and they totally worked for that instrument, and I thought they would be great for the Midtown. But I'm not crazy about the way those strings sound on my Midtown Std. I've got a set of DR Legends flatwounds that I want to try on that bass, but I haven't gotten around to putting them on just yet.

My go-to flats though are D'Addario Chromes. If the Legends don't break in well then I'm probably going to put a set of Chromes on the Midtown.

d'Addario is not a bad company, but IMO the DR
Legends are WAY BETTER than
chromes.
I like flats on this bass, but I must admit it was somewhat hard to take the roundwounds off after hearing that low E sing.

Went with D'Addario Chromes and they sound great with my Midtown Custom! First time purchasing those strings, but IMO they made the bass really sing, and allowed for some of the woodiness to come out in the tone. I've used Rotosounds, T.I's and Fender flats (Prefer T.I's but for the money..) but may switch to Chromes from here on out based on it's pairing with the Midtown

Just got my Midtown back from Mark Erlewine (Erlewine Guitars in Austin). I thought it was great out of the box but Mark did a complete set up including lowering the nut slots. I guess I didn't know what perfection was until now.
All I can say is, "Wow".

Thanks for the update. I need to take mine in to get the neck pup cover shimmed. (Someone mentioned that the finish/wood can sometimes come off when the cover is removed. I wouldn't want something like that to affect my warranty.) Maybe I'll have them go over it, as well.

What effect does lowering the nut slots have? I am thinking that the action toward the top the neck would be lowered as well. Any other less obvious things?

I've had the neck pickup cover off a couple of times to resolve that crazy rattle. No finish issues.

Exactly! The action is low thru out the neck; just like I like it. I had never considered any work on the nut but Mark saw it was needed right away.

Now that I am thinking about it, I do notice that the upper neck frets do clank a bit. I always thought it was my less-than-stellar technique...

Does that mod reduce the propensity for "clanking"?
