Double Bass Gifted a carved upright bass.....needs work

Depends on the instrument. I have spent nearly $40k on repairs and restoration on my main bass. For the above bass, I personally would not spend over $1000

Not really, no.

Maybe you can get an unfinished plywood top and either try the repair yourself or take it to a repair person and have them swap the top. You might have to finish the top, but it might be fun.

I think it's unlikely that you could just go out and buy a replacement top which fit well enough to be usable.

Egad, That bass is the spitting image of mine posted tonight above, Same tuners. Is your a flat back with a sloping shoulder? Mine does. And mine need a lot of repair also, but what the hell I just want to see if it's playable. Any idea as to age/era, just wondering.
