Gig Bag or HSC

When I did band instrument repair, the guy I apprenticed with called gig bags "repairman's friend." YMMV, but for my money I'd rather lug a few extra pounds than risk even a cheap bass getting stepped on, dropped or otherwise impacted. At least for BG. For DB, it's a gig bag ever time because I haven't invested the requisite fortune in a case.

Hard case...I've got too much stuff in the back of my Transit Connect and loads have been known to shift.

That being said, my heart goes out to the metro-based performers: public transportation, no parking, precarious load in / out's, etc. I can certainly see the charm of a well-made bag with dual shoulder straps and deep-well pockets...and a venue-provided backline!

I feel that. Most hard dB cases cost as much or more than some basses!

I've been using this.
The shoulder strap makes it easy to carry, and swinging the case around makes for a nice defensive weapon against roving bass bandits.

The gig bag moves easier. Have not needed a proper hard case since touring/truck days.

I can't imagine a case for my upright, I have sold all my hard cases for Fenders, but wish I had one now

It’s not the pounds first and foremost - it’s a combination of the weight, the format, the lack of carrying options, lack of storage space and the sheer inconvienience of the thing. And if you use a Mono, or any of the other premium gig bags, the protection is as good or better for any situation except one, and that is being crushed by a heavy weight. Which is totally avoidable if you’re careful, which is frankly what you should be anyway.

Depends on who and how far it’s being moved. I own HS and gig bags for both. If it’s a crosstown practice or gig, and schlepped by me, then it’s the gig bags. Distance destinations or moved by someone else, then it’s hard shell all the way.

Bag IT ! Lots of pockets to put your needs in. Don't know how many hallway walls I have banged up with my old
hard case. Just got to take more care of the Bass in the soft bag! Oh for the wimps !! that complain about a Bass that's a pound and a half too heavy.... they are lighter too .

Bag all the way. I'm the only only touching my bass going to practice or a gig and I'm not dropping anything on it or doing anything else stupid.

I have three HSCs that are going with any bass I sell in the future.

These are 3 scenario's when I'm using a hardcase:

1. Storing basses I'm not playing currently
2. Moving house
3. Mailing out a bass I sold

Every other usecase = gig bag

When you go to a gig or practice. Do you use your gig bag or HSC. Guess I'm wondering if you trust the gig bag.

Since I ride a bicycle to/from, it has to be a backpack style gig bag. They've never yet let me down. I also store them in gig bags on the rack stand.

If your careful and actually give a about your gear a gig bag is fine..
If your careless and irresponsible with your gear a hard case is better...

Gig Bag always. Reunion Blues if traveling much or need to check with airlines or a Mono Vertigo if it's local-ish.

I have a Mono Vertigo gig bag and trust it in any situation, sans flying.
I'm going to buy a Mono Dual Bass bag shortly. I think their products a well designed and well constructed.
