Gig bags mainly because I’m driving to wherever I’m taking it. Now if it was riding in the back of a truck or van and handled by a roadie, I’d have it in a HSC.
Gig bag for sure.
Although the nice Mono double gig bag cost more than many HSC, and is totally worth it.

My Warwick came with one of those polyfoam cases. It's lighter than a HSC, but still gigantic. Maybe I can get lucky and swap it for a decent bag.

For the 99% of the time I'm transporting in my car, gig bag. If someone else is handling or it's going into a cargo van or trailer, hardcase.
Prefer case. Just bought a Ibanez RB850 from GC. Was told just a gig bag, got it home opened the box and it was in the original HSC. Big plus for me.
I had a few basses in HSC’s stacked against the wall with a loaded gig bag on top. Not paying attention one day and stumbled into the stack and as i tried to recover i stepped back and heard a crack. Turns out the gig bag slipped off the stack and i stepped on the neck just below the headstock and broke the neck. Still use gig bags but only if i’m taking a bass and a combo amp. Any more gear or an overnight trip and it’s an HSC.
It depends on how particular you are, where you are gigging and how you are getting there.
Me, I am too particular, I always use a hardshell case.
If I were going to use a bag, it would have to be heavily padded, not on of those that you get with a new bass.
If I had such a bag, I would only carry it if I were in my own vehicle and could make I could place it on top and know that nothing would shift around(there are no guarantees of this, so I use a case).
After a gig is when I would always choose a case over a bag because after I hit the last note, off comes the strap and in the case it goes. I set the case next to a wall where it's least likely to be knocked over and stepped on. Then I can break down everything else.
The only things I like about is you can throw them over your shoulder and if you are doing small gigs where you are toting a light amp. Toting them upstairs is easier over the shoulder too.
I’ll 3rd the Gator Go Pro gig bag. These things are great. Can say I’ve tried the double one but it looks solid as well. They also stand up on their own. Which I put off to the side at gigs. Wallet, phone, key ect go in the top pocket so I can keep an eye on them. And I’ve never had a bass get damaged in mine. Had mine for over 2 years. And I gig over 40 times a year. No strap, zipper issues. No tears inside or out. Even the price is reasonable.

Anvil flight cases or my Enki case. Too much money tied up in basses not to take every precaution.
Almost always gig bags, EXCEPT my 63 Gibson EB0. Only a fool puts a vintage Gibson in a gig bag, for even 1 second.
Case. I thought about a gig bag, then looked at the condition of my cases, not a good idea, for me.
