Gigging Musicians: Cabinet Choice

What is the difference between a modern high-end 115 and say an Ampeg classic SVT cab? The Ampegs are constructed well with heavy duty void free polar plywood, baffling etc. Is it the difference in drivers? Unfortunately I doubt I will ever be able to afford even a small high end cab but I'm curious what sets them apart.

Yeah, it's the drivers and how they allow for cabinet designs that weren't previously possible. The volume and frequency response you can get out of the current generation of top-level Neo speakers is insane.

+1 for the NV610. It's a breeze to move because it rolls. For smaller gigs, I use a couple of Aguilar DB112's. I don't know how much they weigh (25 each?) but they are easy to move too.

I average 8-10 gigs a month. Everything fits on a dolly for one trip.
Orange 2x12 or Carvin 15 micro cabinet... plus a DI.
I'm only covering the stage with my amp.

I use two TL 606 cabs and a heavy 180 w tube head once or twice a month. All quite manageable at the moment!

Nice, seems like amp and cab technology has come so far in the last 10 years. Any recommendations on individual drivers? Maybe one of these days I can try my hand as building a small cab.

My cab history of the last 25 years runs from Mesa Boogie through Aguilar, Epifani and Bergantino to Barefaced. Usually multiple cabs and modular rigs.

That's also been a necessary journey from very heavy (100lb) cabs which damaged my back, to light (21lb) cabs. The quality of sound has always been my main focus. IMO good cabs just make you sound so much better.

Modular setups make me happy.
Right now it's 2 Fender Rumble 1x12's (rented).
Previously it was 2 Bag End 1x15's (only took 1 if i didn't need the firepower).
Soon it'll be 2 fEarful 12/6's, and again, i'll only take 1 if i don't need the firepower.

Lately it's been an Ampeg PF112hlf. Sounds like Ampeg but only weighs 30 lbs. Nice!

How would you compare that cab to the PF115hlf? I'd be using a PF500 with it.

I have 2 GK 2-12's and plan to use one of them at my next gig (theater pit with only the piano in the FOH). I'm using the GK because I'm doubling and need a 2 channel amp (Warwick LWA 1000).

either a Heritage SVT with an 810, or a Portaflex with a 210/115 and a pf 800. I have recently purchased a Mesa 800+ and am eagerly awaiting the two Mesa subway 115 cabs which are 37 lbs each. the ampeg stuff is going bye bye after they arrive. the ampeg's have served me well and I will probably regret losing them but small and light is the way to go when the stages you play on are small.

Aguilar GS412. It is easier to move that the AudioKinesis ThunderChild 112 cabs I used before. It's has casters and it's perfectly designed where one never has to lift it. I merely tilt and slide into my SUV and ditto for the stage. While the until weights over a 100lbs, I literally carry/feel none of that. And it sounds fantastic.

AccuGroove Tri112L and Wedgie 112 w/ GK MB Fusion 800. Sometimes I only take one cab for smaller gigs. I also use an Acoustic Image Ten2 for upright gigs, and sometimes I'll use the Wedgie pole-mounted on a speaker stand as an extension cab with the AI.

A pair of Euphonic Audio Wizzy 12 M-lines stacked vertically. One would be more than enough, but I like to have one closer to ear level, and at 34 lbs each, the extra one isn't much of a burden. Powered by Mesa D800 or EA Doubler.

Double ampeg 410he. I'd love to go micro/lighter but I haven't found anything that delivers the volume or tone like these do.
