Gimme your best 112 Cab Recommendations (this thread again)

how about the aguilar stuff?

I've used two GS112's for about ten years now and see no reason to change to anything else. They are a few pounds heavier than most newer cabs, but they'll punch as good as any high-end cabinet.

Even though Aguilar still makes them, they are yesterday's news around here.

I have the audiokinesis thunderchild and their hathor 1203. For rock and particularly pick playing the Hathor is awesome. The thunderchild I tend to use for more jazz and blues. The combination of both is awesome.

I've been amazed at the gigs I've been able to cover with just a Hathor 1203 and a Aguilar TH350. It helps that both my guitar players are now going direct through Line 6 HD500s. The Hathor is so small and light, I smile every time I load my bass rig in or out! My second choice when I was cab shopping was the Fearless F112. All of the current "super 12s" seem to cover the bottom end of "modern sounding" pretty well. Your description of your tone as "somewhat modern" makes me wonder if a F112 may be more modern that you need up top. I'm sure you can EQ it to give you your sound, but why pay for the sizzle if you're not going to use it. Having the ability to set an F112 in an floor monitor position is a very cool feature if you need such a thing.

I didn't have a chance to try before buying, but I knew based on classifieds activity that I'd be able to flip a Hathor for pretty close to what I paid for it if I didn't like it, so it was a low risk decision. Only question now is should I get another one to cover larger outdoor stages I do a couple of times a year and sell my 2 big cabs. Bottom line, as I'm sure you're getting by now, is that there are lots of great choices and different flavors of awesome. Good luck with your gear quest.

I would be looking at the offerings of Baer, Greenboy, Audiokinesis, and Barefaced. They are all different flavors of good.

I have an Aguilar SL112 and I absolutely love it. It goes great with the TH500, they sound (and look) great together. IMO it is suited for passive basses where you want a tube-y vibe in a lightweight package. I have tried the same cab with a used Subway D800 head I recently acquired, and those sound good together too (though they look kind of mismatched -- makes me want a Subway cab... ouch, my OCD... ).

I love my Aguilar SL112s. I doubt I'd ever consider selling them. I have used them with my Aguilar TH500 and an Ampeg PF500. They sounded great with either amp. I'm waiting to try them with an Aguilar AG700. If I like that combo I can get another SL112 and have a lightweight monster rig!

Just stay away from the Fender Rumble 112's. They're light, but horribly inefficient and midscooped.

I'll second the fEarful 12/6. 1 of those does the same job as 2 regular 112's. I built mine for roughly the cost of a higher end 112.

Each cabinet is made to order by David Luke. I truly don't think you would be disappointed. I do not work for him, but I do endorse his cabinets.
