GK MB 200: Part Two

Right, not a complaint but a question.

I used by Markbass LM tubes second input for kick drum mic the other gig and it was great. I actually took my MB200 to do this and when I plugged in the kick drum mic, it seemed to have very little output (still works fine for bass).

I am assuming it was an impedance matching problem or a sensitivity issue which is causing the massive difference in volume on the MB200 - am I right in saying that it is less suited to microphones and PA use due to the input type?

Would you please brief me on how it sounds through your AE112?

I use this combination for weekly rehearsals with my alt rock style band (think foo fighters, green day, pearl jam) and usually play my Am Std Pbass. I sounds great, nice and full and volume usually on about 10:00. Fits perfectly with load drummer and 2 guitars. I also used for a recent gig with cover band I'm in. Worked well for that, though we have some FSI (frequency space intrusion) in that band - too much left hand from keys player, too much bass in amp settings for guitarist - so would have liked a bigger cab.

I love mine! I only had one issue, I played a few gigs with it (trying it out, intending on using it for a backup to my MB500) and it developed a high frequency buzz/whine (like RF or something) that started after the unit reached operating temp. I rolled off the high freqs to get through the gig and tested it when I got home. Sure enough it started making noise after about 30 minutes. Luckily I was within warrenty with MF and exchanged it. I'm betting it was a gain stage going out, but no matter what, if it got lost, stolen or simply died I would replace it in a heartbeat. Outstanding little bugger!

I used mine Saturday just as a DI :D .

My "bass rig" consisted of the MB200 on the bottom with a DBX 163X and Nady Wireless receiver piled on top. I ran electrical tape around the stack to keep it together :hmm: . I've gotta find a better solution for that :rollno: .

Oh, and I wasn't using a cab as we were all on IEM's  . I had a wooden "TV tray" to put my rig on (and as a beverage holder :p) but maybe I just should have brought a cab as a rig stand just for the looks :bassist: ?

Emailed Jason, cc'ed Brian. Basically quoted what I posted above, and pointed them to this thread. I also mentioned that there's a lot that I like about the amp otherwise, and would love to use it as a backup/practice/small-gig/basic preamp if I could have confidence in its functioning.

Received an email from Brian, saying they'll replace the amp. Will update as things proceed.

Sounds like an impedance matching problem. When I used it for PA monitor I used a line-out tap from the main board. I havent used it with a microphone but I would bet the results will vary mic-to-mic. Make sure the -10db switch is set to off.

Use an impedance matching transformer also, the mike is probably 600 ohm balanced and you need to go to a unbalanced HiZ.

I got one about a month ago. Very impressed but one slight problem. The supplied power connector is not a firm connection and sometimes the amp goes dead as vibration loosens the connector . Not sure if anyone else has had this issue?

This is usually a cord issue, not a connector issue. Cords can vary from spec a lot more than the receptacles. Try a different cord.

I love my MB200. I run it through a 4 ohm EV 215 Low Frequency cabinet and it does a great job. The mb200 so small, people tend to use my cabinet like a table. By the end of the night there are cups, trash, sweatshirts and flower vases on my cab next to my amp head.

i realize this is bad forum protocol but I'm in a hurry... :hiding:
could one of you mb200 fans answer 2 questions:
1. why MIA vs MIC?... other than feeding people who beat and torture their citizens....:rollno:
2. Please tell me it does not sound, nor act, like a 700rb-II....

thx!~

I have an MIC MB200 and have had no issues thus far and I've been abusing it at practice every week.

I haven't played through any flavor of 700RB but to me the sound is similar to my old 400RB just "tighter" and more focused.

I'm soo happy right now, I can barely stand it!

In short - I've been using GK amps for soo many years I can't remember...
since I got my first out-sourced amp mb-500 (went through 5 before I got one that kinda worked),
then mb-fusion, mb-200 (went through 2 then gave up)
I had nothing but problems... cracklin', popping, shutting off at a gig, etc

Just a few days ago I decided to order a made in USA mb-200 from RMC ...
Built way better! the chassis is actually straight... Absolutely quiet, no pops
no crackles, no weird freaky alien noises what-so-ever! - I love it, finally!!!

Thank you GK for bringing production back to the US - I love you guys! :)

You had a GK amp where the chassis wasnt square????? Wow!
