OH NO… I did not take the weight as a critique… And I hope my reply was not received as such. :-) I was just stating as a Fender-ish lover, I guess I'm so used to heavy ASH body, LOG basses, anything under 9lbs is like a dream or something! LOL!!
@blindrabbit - I used to have some problems some years ago. I found out it was all about the strap. Now I know why Carlos Santana has those massive, 5" wide straps. The less the bass gets to sit on one of the collar/shoulder nerves, the better. 2.5 minimum width for lighter basses and surely 3.5 for my heavier basses.

Yeah, I've read a lot about different straps, and I've always used ones that are quite wide. I think part of my problem is that it isn't just my shoulder, its my back as well, so it just ends up being all about the weight. I will say though that almost anyone would benefit from having better and wider straps.

A little off topic here mods... but wow, there's a lot of us on TB with bad backs and shoulders... myself included, though at age (almost) 45, it hasn't hindered my playing. For that matter, it wasn't caused by playing either... car wrecks and ladder accidents did my spine and left shoulder in 20 years ago. Very thankfully, my hands don't hurt at all.

Focused attention on posture while on stage works best for me. That goes double for upright. Now back to Club Godin! :D

Here's a question: what strings are you using on your A5 fretless? I recently installed a set of LaBella Deep Talkin' nylon tape wounds on mine, which were a HUGE improvement on the standard set, but I've still got a lot more bottom end than I like.

I am using D'Addario Nylon Tapewounds on my fretted A5 Ultra. I tried the GHS Nylon tapewound set for about 2 days. I like the heavier guages they offer for the A and D strings but the G string could stand to be a little heavier. It also sounded like the G string could have used more nylon inner wrap. It sounded clacky too me... More plastic sounding?? Anyway, I switched back to the D'Addario set and have been happy with them.

Mine had some kind of D'Addario flats when I got it, (color-coded ball-ends) but I soon switched to TI Jazz Flats. I hear the black tapewounds are superior on the Godin semi-acoustics... might try a set sometime, but I'm really ok with TI's since I use them on just about everything else.

I have an older A4 fretless that I've been using a lot in a new project - nylon string jazz guitarist-vocalist and me on bass, think John Pizzarelli sound. I changed out the TI flats that had been on it forever, and put on Labella tape wounds. WOW! Different instrument. Feels great under the fingers, and sounds amazing. My guitarist loves it. Want more wood sound, no problem. More middle sound, no problem.

Hey all... Gosh, I haven't been on Talkbass for a long time... Just wanted to share this solo excerpt from a project I'm working on with a friend of mine...

Godin A5 Ultra Fretless direct into Protools through a Amplitube plugin with the "Jaco" preset... The added distortion from the plugin is pretty cool. Kind of gives it more of an (dare I say) upright growl character...

On my A4 I use LaBella tapes. I love the sound - sort of a woody thump. The open G string and higher tones seem to be lacking, and it sounds like it might be an electronics issue with these basses. I intend to get mine to a tech and see if there is an issue with the equalizer.

If you dig back through here, you'll find that's often commented on... my A5 fretless has the same issue - open G is decidedly weaker than the D. Same with the upper register, but I personally find the latter to be a welcome 'upright-like' feature. You kinda' have to attack those notes a little harder. YMMV of course. That said, it could be an electronics issue. I doubt it's a string thing though... mine has TI Jazz Flats and behaves in a similar fashion.

Agreed. I don't think it's a string thing either, but the treble knob on the equalizer pretty much does nothing with regard to the sound of the instrument.

yesterday I sold my Gibson Exploere Bass and went straight to a musicstore to buy some goodies - TECH21 pedals, MXR compressor this and that...---- but ended up buying this baby ... damn you Godin for making such a good instrument for half the price that it should be (I tried out a used Stingray, too - but was nowhere near as good as the Godin in build quality and sound) :D

Godin has what seems an odd way of naming their models and specs... it's like they go waaay outta' the way to not copy certain other maker's signature details just on some things. Maybe just a Candian thing I wouldnt understand, but it's a very good thing IMO... I love that they're not just a copycat maker.

The Shifter Classic is another great take on a passive P/J configuration, but the creme' brulee' finish for instance, is named after a rich, sweet dessert. :D

Just sayin' - whoever in Godin's marketing dept. thinks of these things needs a bonus. :p
