GoFundMe to Pay for Gear?

Mostly this. I think there's nothing wrong with crowd-funding an album, but sometimes these campaigns can come across as disingenuous.
I would expect this kind of weasel gimme attitude from a drummer... but not a bass player! We should be above that kind of thing, since we usually set the moral tone for our bands....

The scumbags ruin it for everyone else. One of my friends daughters started a sob story GFM page so people could pay for her hearing aids that she legitimately need. What she didn't tell people was that she spends her own money on pot, tattoos and raves.

Doesn't mean it isn't happening and if it does, there's little to no recourse for the people who were scammed. Trust is nice but people aren't trustworthy
Fund Me or Fraud Me? Crowdfunding Scams Are on the Rise
I was really needing a new car recently, I should've crowdfunded it.
This is terrifically stupid, IMO. If you can't afford gear, buy other gear. There are plenty of great, cheap instruments out there. Get a used Fender, or buy a Squier. You don't need a 6 string fretless Fodera Monarch for your tour of local bars, where most people won't be listening and your parents are clapping from the front row. Want =|= need. GoFundMe, IMO, should be for situations where money is needed without possibility of obtaining it yourself for extenuating circumstances. Paying for a child's trip to Europe with their senior class, helping out with emergency cancer treatments, donations to an organization, not because you have GAS.

Has anyone posted a link to one of these gofundme sites yet? I would gladly donate a dollar to tell someone how tactless I think they are.
I don't know. I arguably have high quality gear, but I use what's called the "Layaway Plan". Took me months to buy my latest American Standard.
So what? People can contribute money if they want to help out, but they don't have to. Neither do you.
Personally? I wouldn't start a gofundme for a luxury thing such as an instrument. My opinion is that they are for emergency situations and provide a way for family and friends to help out without making things awkward.
I think it's fine for bands to have gofundme's for stuff like recording/band van/misc band expenses. Why not? It's very possible to be a very talented band and to have very little money. In fact, it's quite common. And a good quality recording can literally mean the difference between success and failure for an originals band. If I really liked the band, I would (and have) contribute to something like that.
However, I doubt an expensive bass will make a difference. So even if I really liked the band/person, I wouldn't contribute money for that.
As some of the older folks have mentioned, a lot of my generation seem to have no personal pride in anything, and feel they deserve things they haven't earned. So they panhandle instead of work hard.

for gear, nope, they are to help people in need. What's next you don't like the car you are driving or you really wanted a Harley so you ask others to pay for it Loser with a "L" I come from the work for what you got side of the planet.
if you dont like it dont fund them. that simple. who gives a crap.

Why shouldn't it be acceptable? If I'm offering services to people and in return they are helping to fund something I need, whether it be a bass, a new album, buying new merch for gigs, what exactly is the problem?
My band fully intends on using a GoFundMe to try and raise money for our new album mixing and mastering. Basically, we're selling the album to people through their funding as well as some awesome exclusives for people who are fans of the band. To me, it's a win-win.
