Going to be China Free in 2008

Now that argument is just shallow, disingenuous and weak.

If I didn't want to buy something because it was made by a Chinese person, I'd have a hard time going to Chinese restaurants all the time. Except those are Chinese who came here, embraced capitalism, and are helping our economy with their contributions.

Besides, China is a country, not a race.

Think about how your money pouring into China encourages their already bad behavior with regards to human rights, workers rights, workplace safety, etc. etc. Seems kind of 'racist' to encourage that kind of dehumanizing behavior just to get cheap products.

Not to mention that China steals a lot of our patents and produce and sell the products anyways. I have two inventions in my head that I think would really sell, and I'm not going to produce it because after startup costs, I may sell a years' worth of them before I see cheap Chinese copies being sold on Ebay for pennies on a dollar.

So it's about quality, right? Well, every aluminium part on the Space Shuttle is made in China (I've been to the factory that makes them). If it's OK for NASA it's not OK for you?

What about the American manufactured potato chips that were exported to china that contains materials that contravened their food safety legislation? Should I not be boycotting American potato chips because they're sub-standard?

If that is true, do you think the same standards are followed for NASA parts as consumer parts? That's a silly argument, dude. I never said China (or any other country) couldn't make high quality stuff, I said, IMO, they don't. Hummer, the Army truck, makes three different consumer versions. Can you compare all three of them, and/or expect an H3 to handle real-world war conditions that a vehicle based off the H1 deals with all the time? Hell no. Does that mean the company isn't capable of producing a vehicle that can??? Obviously not.

NASA is the government entity that sacrificed the lives of its astronauts to be environmentally friendly (they stopped using the foam that WORKED in favor of the current flaking-off inferior product they use now that caused the shuttle disaster along with the damaged wing scares we've been hearing about) so I wouldn't use them as a shining example.

You're also talking about a government entity that uses price bidding as a way to select producers.

^^^ +1 it's not racist at all, I really don't care if it's made by a Chinese person or not, it's the reputation corporations in that country have gained. The Government isn't as strict on labor laws and quality issues, so the factories tend to cheapen their product to make the most business and therefore $$ as possible. I'm an avid supporter of South Korean, Japanese and even Taiwan (a country that is even viewed still part of China interationally, pfft yah right the republic of China just likes to think that ) products, why because they're quality control is fairly good, so your spewing out a load of BS by saying anybody who doesn't buy Chinese goods is racist.

How about if I don't like to support a country who turns it's head from poor labor conditions, can be fairly is corrupt and is communist.

For the record China is a pretty awesome place with a great history and beautiful landscape it's too bad some of the government policies and corruption tend to give a negative view on it.

Also I'm fine with Chinese products that are from a company with good quality control (yes there are some. Some companies there are merely based in China but they pride themselves with skilled workers and good quality control, just not the majority.

I absolutely do not buy anything substandard if I can afford to make that choice.

Honestly, I have 3 kids and a stay at home wife, I cannot afford to shop based on principles. I wish I could but price, features and quality are the only factors I consider. I would love to never set foot in a Walmart ever again but it saves me about $50 a week to get stuff there instead of a supermarket.

Buying products made in my home country does not make me racist. It makes be biased. This is the only forum I know of where you can be "unethical" for buying copied designs produced by "slave" labor and racist if you choose not to.
No, but you'd be prejudiced if you thought that everything that came from China was a copied design produced by slave labour. It appears many can't make the distinction. :hmm:

I think RIM's parts come from China. They just have enough local content to be legally branded "Made in Canada". I would not be surprised if most of the electronics were made in China (or Indonesia/Malaysia/insert Asian country that is not Japan here.)

Well from what I know from a few people that work there, EVERYTHING is made in Canada. The circuitboards are made here (individual parts might be from somewhere else, but they are made in Canada), the cases are outsourced to a place in Guelph (another city around here) and I think the buttons are made there as well. Sorry, not trying to argue this or anything. Oh, also most of the engineers and whatnot are guys that graduated from the University of Waterloo, which is across the street from RIM's HQ.

One thing that is coming out of china that is very good quality is some automatic watch movements. They are not of the same quality as Japanese or European movements, but they still can keep time to within a few seconds a day. Here is the site http://www.alpha-watch.com/ . Not to mention that they look sweet as well.

Run by me again how not wanting something solely because it's made by a Chinese person isn't racist.

I wouldn't say that my decisions are a racist decision. In many instances it really is a quality thing. Especially in the case of food. I'm not going to blindly eat something because I fear being called a racist. The food grown in the wetlands of many areas in China is grown in contaminated water. They don't have organizations like the FDA, EPA, or the quality control that are in place in other countries like the US, England, Japan (those pop in my mind off the top of my head). So products like cabbage, lettuce, seaweed and seaweed products, many of the small farm fish and the fishmeal products are produced and packaged without any quality control. Additionally, because they are able to produce this stuff so cheaply, the market gets flooded with it, which in the end eliminates choice. My wife and I went into a japanese market the other day and we were looking for some seaweed for sushi. Not one of the packets was made in Japan. Japanese companies are outsourcing like US companies. There were six different brands there. Not one was from Japan. We left. We went to another store. Same story. In the end, we bought some seaweed from a company that packaged it in South Korea.

Companies that don't outsource their labor tend to be smaller companies. I tend to like smaller companies better. Less volume. More attention to details. Has nothing to do with race. The argument that decisions like this are racist is lame politically correct garbage.
