Double Bass Good cab for doubling using Clarus II?

One question for you Clarus heads out there, I wasn't really thinking about the fact that it has two effects loops, which means I can only place my pedal tuner on one bass or the other. Does anyone have any magical way to avoid the plug/unplug nightmare of this other than getting another tuner or "tuning by ear" (in a rock envorinment, this is pretty impossible to do)? Or should I just plunk the $40 down on another tuner?

Volume pedal with seperate tuner out is the way to go. You can tune without anyone hearing you.

Mike, I could if I got a little hand truck thing of some sort - the entire rig is ~34lbs so it is about as portable as they come. Also, the EA cab is quite compact and easy to move. I don't have a wheel on my bass though, so its theoretical.

I generally carry in my electric bass and double bass together, then the amp, so until I get rid of the slab, I will be stuck as a two trip sally. Its just that my second trip had gotten MUCH lighter!

If I had noticed this thread sooner, I would have highly recommended the Wizzy, but I see that you got along just fine without my input! :)

The Wizzy really is an exceptional product, especially for a one driver (no tweet), very portable cab. It is my cab of choice for doubling at lower volumes. At higher volumes, 2-3 VL-208's become my cab(s) of choice. I did a little shootout at home with my Wizzy versus a VL-208, a VL-110, and then both the VL-208/VL-110. I clearly preferred the Wizzy to either of the other two cabs on their own (even after volume-correcting for the impedance difference), but the two together were slightly better (in overall balance and in low frequency extension) than the Wizzy. Still, I was very impressed that the Wizzy held its own so well against that VL mini stack.

Enjoy!

Tom.

Lerm,

How's the portability on the Clarus/WZ? Can you schelp them along with your DB in the door in one trip?

You can do it in one trip. I do, but it's really awkward. The hardest part is keeping the slab gig bag and AI soft bag on your shoulders while you have the bass and cab in your hands.

Actually, my tuner has an output that mutes it when you tune. its just that I will need two of those babies now...

Have you seen the Intellitouch tuners? Clamps onto the bridge and works through vibrations. I find them great in noisy enviroments, and no cables are necessary. Cost like 65 dollars. Use watch batteries (I think) so does not go through batteries. There was another thread on this forum, most of it positive, except for one gent who said they the plastic clamp arms can easily break.

With my Clarus/Falk Audio setup, I use Dual-lock to attach the Clarus to the cab, which makes it basically a tiny little combo with a removable head. With a good folding handcart (a Raxxes), I'm able to sling the DB bag over my shoulder with a strap, then pull the cart with my amp and stool with the other hand. Slightly awkward, but completely doable.

If you are going to use a folding hand truck,
why not just put the speaker on. Then secure
the amp on top. (straps around handle) Next,
stand your electric in front of the speaker and
put a bunji cord around the bass and speaker.
With no stool, seems like a one trip deal.
Target has a black folding luggage handler with
a fairly big wheel for $29.00

Today's update: yesterday I got my Aphex Acoustic Exciter and Punch Factory Compressor (for the DB and slab respectively). I am quite pleased with the Exciter - its seems to really liven up my bass max through the clarus/EA set up. As an added bonus, you can power these Aphex pedals using phantom power, which the Clarus has, so I just run from the k&k preamp into the exciter, then from there to the CLarus with an XLR. Sounds great - I just need to tweak with the controls more.

The Punch Factory is another story. I am using this again before the amp input. It just seemed to make my bass *too* punchy, even when used at really low levels. It somehow tweaks the Stingray's nice sounding humbucker and gets rid of those dramatic highs and lows that it is famous for. It somehow makes my stingray sound kind of bad to be honest - really sterile and it accentuates certain frequencies that make me cringe. Nothing I did with the amp eq or the onboard eq seemed to help.

So I am off today to get a sans amp to warm things up, and I may just get rid of the silly "Punch Factory" thing. I was quite surprised because it's got some great reviews - maybe its just the combo of my bass and the amp that make it sound bad to me. I do have to say these Aphex pedals are really nicely featured for the money.

Finally, one thing I've discorvered that is bugging me. I use a Blue Tube distortion pedal on a couple of tunes on the slab, and I've discovered that this pedal basically doesn't work at all when used in the Clarus' effects loop. The overall output just gets quieter when you click it on, and its very faint, even if cranked. I have the effects blend all the way up. I know the effects loop works - when I put the Punch Factory in the loop, I had huge gain levels. Is this an impedance thing? Any idears?

Reefer, you're actually right on the money there - I experimented all weekend and realized I should have just listened to you! The compressor was just accentuating what was already there - some weird midrange frequencies that wouldn't drop out correclty with either the Stingray EQ or the Clarus EQ, and also the weird problem of the low end dropping out when you hit the low E (both EQ's seemed to only be affecting down to low F! - this could have something to do with the wizzy in combination with my bass).

So to experiment, I plugged into the acoustic exciter dealie, and yep sure enough the sound was HUGE (too huge!). I think ultimately an exciter used more subtley would cure this problem magnificently - but I only have one and I am using it for the DB. So I plugged in my old Fishman Dual Paramteric DI box, charged up 65 and 100hz, dropped out the mids a little on the amp and stingray, and it sounds pretty good. Definitely sounds more rockish and ballsy, which is what I happen to need/like. I think it will get me by until I have enough cash to support my G.A.S. again.....

I have a question for both Lermgalieu and Tombowlus(both Wizzy users).. i would like to buy a wizzy but my only fear is that whenever i use a cab with a tweeter, i always put it off, i just dont like those highs...the wizzy doesnt have a tweeter, it has a cone, how you deal with those highs? are they very proeminent? im afraid that the wizzy will sound to crispy and metallic with my upright, i play a lot new orleans slap style, but i dont like a crispy slap if you know what i mean..thats what im afraid off, by the way , i will be using the wizzy with a iamp 500
since i wont have the chance to try it before i buy it, all the help is necessary, thanks in advance

NUNO

Well here's the deal - I don't think you need to worry about highs being too crisp or anything, the Wizzy doesn't give you those hissy highs like a horn, they are much smoother.

That said, for playing with a rock band, I found I just needed more speaker surface area in general, so I picked up a portabass 110 cabinet on sale at guitar center. I found that this cabinet adds some more low end into the equation and it has an attenuable horn, so that combined with the high fi sound of the Wizzy I am getting a good 'hit you in the chest but still clear as a bell" type of sound. I will however be still using the wizzy alone sometimes as well. I have also found that I the wizzy alone with the clarus flat sounds exactly like my bass (to a fault heh), so I've got the Aphex acoustic exciter pedal to help make the overall sound a bit bigger. My thought, eveen though I don't play slap is that the only thing you will want is a little more "oomph" with an agressive style like slap. What kind of pup do you use? Does your bass have a great natural tone that you are basically looking to reproduce?

Thanks guys....i guess i will go for the iamp 500 + wizzy....
maybe in the future i can ad an extra cab, even if its not gonna give me more output power, since at 2 or 4 ohms, the iamp gives the same 500 watts, but it will move more air for sure..i was just afraid of those crispy highs and boomy bass that have been destroying my brain(and money) for years now...
i really like the acoustic sound of my bass, the slap sound is a lot like Willie Dixon, the pizz sound is very Paul Chambers( if i just could play like him...) :(
I use an underwood or the Schertler Stat B, the Schertler sounds better with 90% of the amps, lately i was playin with an amp which belonged to the other 10%...
well, im selling a lot of gear now and i hope in the next week i can order my EA gear... i just hope is going to be what im expecting... i'm sick of buying gear...G.A.S please go away...
