Good read on "The Great Debate"

I vaguely remember "solid state tubes". Seems they were crazy expensive, but that was the claim that they were just like the tubes except made with solid state technology. Seemed to me like a solution without a problem at the time, but if they worked that well to where they're indistinguishable from a real 12ax7, maybe there's something in the obsolete technology that holds a key to making solid state behave just like tube amps?

The deal was they stayed the same, no wear-out, no emission problems, no need for a heater/filament power supply, glass can't crack, the parts were lots smaller than tubes, many manygood things about them.

He was working on power tube devices as well. We *really* wanted to use the parts.....we thought they were that good..... but he could not get financing, and the whole thing foundered.
 
So another really deadly fault in the DBT test is that the units were not used in ways typical of actual guitar usage..... In the linear unclipped and un-distorted range, one SHOULD NOT be surprised that most people cannot distinguish any difference between tubes and transistors..... if the circuits are competently designed, there will BE little difference.

it is totally improper to attempt to spin the test as having relevance past what was actually done, what was actually tested...... Which seems to be that if you do your best to match two circuits in frequency response, and run both at levels which are virtually undistorted, the total audible difference between them is going to be small.
This agrees, no difference.
Only at extremes would there be differences. Old SS maybe became unstable at clipping. Not true anymore. Time moves on.

You have to keep the Coke and Pepsi at the same temperature during a taste test. This is what this paper did in the setup. It's what DBT's do.

Seamonkey apparently has somewhat of an agenda, evidently an unquestioning faith that any "methodologically valid" test is always golden as proof (or disproof) of a theory which it purports to test, and unfailing energy in promoting his beliefs.

We have to put some trust in science, or there is no progress. Electron theory and all.

Scientist write papers, do studies, and DBT's it how science progresses and corrects itself.

It's not a problem for me. My world of Old School Sound to Modern alternatives is growing exponentially. New products from well established companies that have seen the light as well as brand new companies crawling out of the woodwork. It's a good time to be a musician.

Throughout history, companies either flow with technology developments or wither away.

Encyclopedia Britannica has modernized, they don't print encyclopedias anymore. They moved to modern information services and are very strong. They must read what they write.

Other companies host steadfast then some new graduate student or crazy person figures out there's a better way. And it takes off. Look at the worlds youngest billionairs to see why they come up with things others missed. This actually has happened time and time again in history. It's nothing new.

I do not share his apparent beliefs. Neither life not science is that simple. There are ALWAYS other considerations, unforseen issues, and things which the test didn't test.

In some sciences we know quite a bit, like pressure waves in air. Loudspeakers/motors have not changed much since invented.

Some sciences are stable and mature while others like we're doing at CERN we still have quite a bit to learn. It's flat out that all sciences are at the same state of maturity.

As in this case.

* The one exception is the devices which Kirkwood Rough had at NAMM many years ago. They were "solid state", of a somewhat obsolete type normally seen only in textbooks now, and were an essentially direct duplicate in performance of a generic 12AX7. They measured same, and sounded same..... because they BEHAVED the same... INHERENTLY.

No other solid state device I have any familiarity with has that sort of performance.

This poor guy has no chance. No matter how many DBT's or hand on playing tests are done. It will be just this same thread repeated.

Designers of tube gear and all electronics are using computers to model tubes and circuits (for years). The real world measurements match. Nearly everything is designed on computers first. I'm sure you know.

Designs may be analog gear for the "perception" or digital for the flexibility.

Signal in to signal out - both can be the same no matter how they are derived.

By the way. Teemuk wrote an excellent book on the history of SS amplifiers. He details how things came about. It is a must read for those interested in the history of SS and Tube MI Amplifiers.
 
17 test subjects is plenty big enough sample size for 2 choices.

No, it's not. While simple design can help cut down on sample size for optimal statistical power, sampling error and the possibility of type I and type II error is still too great with an n of 17, bimodal distribution or not. Seventeen participants are what undergrad psych majors have when they present their independent research projects at their university's poster day. It's not what theories and major research findings are staked upon. A paper like this wouldn't get published in a respective journal today. Hell, if you walked into a dissertation defense with an n of 17, your committee would probably laugh you out of the room.

The coin flipping analogy makes no sense because it's a number of discreet random events. The only randomness you're getting with controlled research is (hopefully) random error.

I don't think you'd need a DBT of any sort to get people to admit a SS tube emulator could be mistaken for a tube amp if it really worked. I never in a million years thought they'd get anywhere close and I and many other tube amp lovers are admitting how close it is these days.

The inherent problem is that that Golden Ears reject the results of any such test, no matter what you do. They have done, consistently, since the dawn of audio gear.

There are flaws with a hardline Measures The Same dogma too, but at least the MTS crowd encourage more and better testing, and the sane ones do not reject reasonable test results.
 
A real Golden Ear rejects testing entirely. Golden Ears was the wrong term to use but I was trying to be fair to the MTS crowd.

I think Jimmy would submit to the facts if he and his likeminded players were found to be statistically no more accurate than guessing.

What say the proponents? There's a huge brains trust in TB that could come up with a method. All we need is amps, players and a venue.

Well said, although statistical accuracy and stating of the facts does not seem to establish any sort of direction or conclsuion when there are those with an agenda that appears to be focused on confrontation.

I for one appreciate your thoughts and wisdom on this matter.
 
Regardless of what you may believe about those of us who like, use, and prefer tube amplifiers, be aware that many of us long for the day when we cannot hear a difference in tone, soundstage, touch sensitivity, etc.
I have been settling for compromises with amps other than my all tube units (based on wieght) and really wish to retire them and use lighter, less expesnive amps in the future.
Maybe they are inferior in true audio reproduction, but many find these signal alterations to be highly musical.

I would suggest that a more relevent set of tests would be to have 2 amps that looked exactly the same. Both would have glowing tubes. One would use the tubes in the amplicification chain and the others would be SS devices with the tubes serving only as a glowing light source. The A/B testing would be in both a band situtaion as well as a tester swithcing between the two while playing solo. If a large majority of players agreed that they prefered one to the other, then some sort of conclusion could be reached regarding which is a better fit for this larger group of players.

IMO, this would take away all the black magic / tech mumbo jumbo and allow bass players to use their ears to decide what is right for them while playing music.
 
Amusing how my post has been twisted so that I am portrayed as if I "agree with" a radically different conclusion.....

1) test found no difference between tube and SS units.... in a proper DB test.... therefore there IS no detectable difference under any circumstances....

A conclusion I very much do NOT agree with.

2) The test was very nice, probably close to a "proper" DBT according to S-M, but it either carefully eliminated, OR totally failed to test, behavior of the units in the regimes where they would be expected to perform differently.....

I certainly would agree with that statement.

it is very much as if you painted a plaster wall and a drywall surface the exact same color, and required people to stand 8 feet away silently and observe the wall sections in the same light for visually detectable differences....using the very best DBT methodology....

And then stated that DBTesting found no difference so the only "proper" test cannot find a difference, of course dismissing all other tests as "methodologically unacceptable". You can truthfully state that the "only valid test found no difference".

An example of how "truth" is twisted to prove what may be a lie.....

The FAILURE to find a difference is only "evidence", and reliable only to the degree that teh source is reliable and able to see a difference. The person who was outside the front of the bank, and states he did NOT see the accused among the robbers, is telling the truth.....

But since the robbers entered and left through the back door of the bank, that is totally irrelevant as far as showing that the accused was in fact NOT among them....
