So I found this bass at goodwill and I have no idea what brand it is or if it's homemade. Thoughts?

Looks like an Italian Eko or something. If it's more than $75.00 just get the candles. That early 60's fish tank/poacher is neat too.

I used to own a Teisco guitar that had a 'laminated' neck like that bass. That, and the hardware and general look of that bass point to it being a Teisco or other Japanese-made instrument from the late 60s - early 70s time period. $30 is a fair price.

Looks like a Kay K-1B bass. Looks like something happened to the pickguard though.

I second the Kay 1B. When Kay/Valco went belly up in 1968 or 69, the name got picked up by Asian distributors. The 1B was part of the new Japanese line. There also was a Precision Bass marketed by J C Penney, of all people. The heaviest P-bass I have ever encountered.

I agree. I think it's an old Japanese Kay. When I first started playing, one of my friends owned one, so I'm somewhat familiar with them. Another friend had the guitar version of Kay SG.

Even if it doesn't work electronically, it's $30. You can fix the wiring if there's an issue. I'd be looking at the neck for any twists or other oddities.

Update:I got it down to $25 and bought it. I'm going to a music store to try it out.

I would have to buy it though.
If it plays OK without plugging in it should be worth having something no-one else has.

Yep. Looks like a Kay.

They're fun. And most of them sound pretty good through a decent amp. As long as the neck is ok I'd put it back in shape and rock it for all it's worth.
