Looks like a Kay K-1B bass. Looks like something happened to the pickguard though.

I hadn't clocked the ol' wheel of fortune at the end of the neck there. The only oversight you made is that there is actually a trussrod on the end of the wheel, or that the rod actually does anything like correcting the relief of the neck.

So I found this bass at goodwill and I have no idea what brand it is or if it's homemade. Thoughts?

The popsicle lamination neck construction reminds me of 70's Tiesco's but they didn't usually have those bodies.

The necks actually alright for what it's worth but the action definitely needs an adjustment

I went to the store to play it and it definitely doesn't sound that bad so I'm going to be holding onto it. I'll definitely be looking inside it in the near future!

Looks like the neck joint went whacko. Might be a candidate for threaded inserts to get that thing straight and solidly connected. Make sure those neck holes aren't stripped. Also looks like it has a variation of a "gold foil" pickup.

There's no chance I'd turn that down for $25, that's a great score. Even if you fix it up and decide you don't want it anymore, it'll make a great gift for a new player.

Looks totally rad. Put some flats on there, get it intonated as best you can and keep it for a quirky option when recording. Or even just a noodling-in-front-of-the-TV bass. Cool find.

I bought my first bass that looked like that for 30 bucks in 78...but if you ask the guy I bought it from he says I talked him down to $25...he said it was a Kay but I think the head stock was a little different.

Be interested to know what the nut width is on that bass.

Also it looks like whoever had it before believed in the "no money above the fifth fret" mantra if you look at the finger wear on the neck.

Neck looks a little weighty . Does it dive?

But for 25 bucks you can't really go wrong if the bass is playable.

Foolishly? Nah, the one in the listing (not the pic above) is gorgeous! All original in immaculate shape! People pay plenty for mid century antiques, let alone something that's functioning and in that good shape. Totally fair price for someone who can appreciate such a thing, you couldn't buy a 60's Fender tuning key in that condition for $325.

And I didn't buy it by the way, but if I knew about it and had money to burn it would be hanging next to my Polk-a-lele

As long as they used good glue on the neck laminations,
it should be very stable.
